Danier Leather Converts Legacy Systems
Fujitsu provides One-Stop-Shop to automate and centralize store functions.
CHALLENGE:
Danier Leather, Inc. operates 91 shopping mall, street-front, and "power centre" stores across Canada. They needed to automate their operations and centralize data management. They also needed a reporting system.
SOLUTION:
Fujitsu deployed a wide range of retail technology, including its GlobalSTORE® point-of-sale (POS) software, CustomerCENTER™ customer relationship management (CRM) application, StoreCENTER™ centralized store management software, ValueCENTER™ stored-value card and gift-card software, TeamPoS (POS) hardware and iPAD handheld units.
Fujitsu: A Single Partner to Upgrade and Manage Retail Technology
As one of the largest publicly traded specialty retailers of leather apparel in the world, Danier Leather Inc. designs, manufactures and markets leather and suede clothing and accessories. For more than a quarter century, the retailer has made a positive impact among consumers as a provider of fashionable, yet affordable, leather products.
As the company expanded, executive management realized the need for new technology. It needed a single retail technology vendor that could provide a "one-stop-shop" for its hardware, software, and services needs.
"With a constricted IT department, it is critical that we leverage the expertise of our vendors to efficiently deploy new technologies. However if we purchased all components from separate vendors, it would require extensive coordination and management from our team to integrate and align those technologies," said Phil Cutter, chief information officer for Danier Leather. "So, when [we] chose to upgrade our store system, we looked for a sole provider that could offer a comprehensive solution to enhance our POS functions, CRM capabilities, and more."
After a thorough search of retail technology vendors, Danier Leather turned to Fujitsu and its integrated retailing suite.

GlobalSTORE software is a full-featured, customizable POS, cash management and back office platform. It runs on a Microsoft Windows(r)-based integrated retail software platform and employs service-oriented architecture (SOA). Its retail-specific, modular architecture and rapid-development tools make the software easy to customize and maintain, which lowers Danier's total cost of ownership.
CustomerCENTER software is a customer relationship management (CRM) application designed to help retailers like Danier enhance customer intimacy by understanding customer preferences. CustomerCENTER software includes analytics and campaign management software that helps retailers integrate and analyze customer and business data from multiple systems and create unique marketing campaigns based on that information.
StoreCENTER software provides centralized store management for Danier by aggregating and monitoring data across the retail enterprise in real time. This up-to-the-minute access gives Danier management the ability to operate more efficiently by identifying opportunities at the store level and responding accordingly.
Danier's deployment of ValueCENTER software helped the retailer replace its previous gift certificate system with a card-based system that is easier to track and manage. ValueCENTER software seamlessly integrates with front-end systems like the POS and Web applications.
These software applications are part of the integrated retailing suite of solutions developed by Fujitsu. They are built on an open service-oriented architecture that creates a technology environment. This environment helps Danier develop real-time interoperability between Fujitsu technology and other disparate devices. This interoperability helped speed the installation process.
Fujitsu also deployed its Lifecycle Services. These services include complete project management, technical integration, project planning, procurement, staging, deployment, and ongoing maintenance.
"In addition to integrating components and meeting the short time frame, our biggest challenge was deploying technology with minimal impact to store operations and gaining user acceptance and proficiency," said Cutter. "The Fujitsu rollout was extremely smooth and the system didn't require too much training time - as we expected."
