First Station-to-Station Transmission of High Definition Video Programming in Japan Using MPEG-4 AVC (H.264)

Fujitsu Computer Products of America

Sunnyvale, CA, June 25, 2007

Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc., one of the world’s leading suppliers of innovative computer products including hard disk drives, peripherals, and Ethernet switches, announced that Fujitsu Limited developed a new High-Definition (HD) video encoder to enable station-to-station transmission between TV Asahi and All Nippon Network (ANN) affiliated companies. The new service enables high quality video transmission from station-to-station using inexpensive broadband public IP lines.

With an introduction of terrestrial digital broadcasting and large display TVs for consumer use, the Japanese broadcasting industry has seen increases in transmission of HD Video programming for news and sports between stations and affiliates. Transmission of HD Video content over broadband IP network is becoming popular in Japan due to advancements in encoding technology as well as deployment of inexpensive broadband networks.

Fujitsu employed state-of-the-art MPEG4 AVC (also known as H.264) encoding technology in its IP-9500 Video Encoder, launched in November 2006, that realizes more than twice the video compression compared with current MPEG-2 compression without compromising picture quality. With this new compression technology, transmission of HD video content from station-to-station is now possible over public optical fiber lines.

Fujitsu is not new to the video encoder market. TV Asahi and ANN affiliates have been using the Fujitsu IP-7000 encoder, which utilizes MPEG-2 encoding technology, since May 2006 to enable over 700 Standard Definition (SD) video transmissions per month with significant reductions in distribution costs. Both TV Asahi and ANN affiliates expect similar cost reductions with this new HD system.

Since the introduction of their broadband video encoders in March 2004 in Japan, Fujitsu has enabled stable and high quality video transmission over the Internet to meet the needs of their many customers at low cost. With the introduction of the IP-9500, Fujitsu will continue to provide leading-edge solutions for the global broadcasting industry, as well as education, telecom and government markets.

System Features

IP-based HD Video transmission using inexpensive public networks

Previously, HD video transmission required the use of special lines and mainstream billing using a pay-as-you-go plan. With Fujitsu’s IP-9500 and H.264 encoding, the transmission of HD content can be achieved using public IP optical fiber with greater availability and lower cost.

Uncompromised picture quality using state-of-the-art error correction

The Fujitsu IP-9500 advanced Forward Error Correction (FEC) and Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) enables seamless recovery if IP packet losses occur during transmission over public optical fibers.

Video Transmission with easy operation

A click on the web-based system monitor will start video transmissions or modify the IP-9500 configurations remotely, eliminating the need for specialized IP support. The monitor also lets operators know the real-time status of transmissions from remote locations.

Minimum initial investment and operation cost with simple system configuration

Since one IP-9500 can be configured as either an encoder or decoder, customers only need to purchase one IP-9500 for each functional location in order to send or receive HD video streams. This minimizes initial investment on the system and operation cost. In addition, the IP-9500 has a transmission log that can be used by transmission companies to analyze transmission status.
