Fujitsu Imaging Products Group Presents BlueChip Technologies with Quarterly Innovative Leadership Award

BlueChip Honored for Business Document Imaging System Installation at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital

San Jose, CA, July 06, 2004 — Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. (FCPA), a market leader in document imaging scanners and services, today announced that BlueChip Technologies, Ltd., a document management and imaging solutions provider, was named the company's quarterly "Innovative Leadership" winner by the Fujitsu Imaging Products Group (IPG). BlueChip Technologies received the Fujitsu 2FQ04 award for its innovative Business Document Imaging System (BDIS) installation for Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital (SNMH).

FCPA's quarterly "Innovative Leadership" awards recognize independent software vendors (ISVs) that leverage pioneering document imaging products and concepts to streamline and optimize business processes positively impacting their customers' bottom line.

Like many healthcare organizations, Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital, located in Grass Valley, Calif., faced the challenge of mounting costs associated with paper documents, like storage and accessibility. Consequently, SNMH looked to move towards a paperless-based work environment using integrated document management and imaging solutions from BlueChip Technologies, including the Fujitsu fi-4120C workgroup scanners.

The priority for SNMH was to reduce costs associated with the patient registration process — with particular focus on preprinted forms and process inefficiencies associated with the capture, routing and storage of patient documentation. This patient documentation included insurance cards, condition of admission (consent), notice of privacy practices, physician order, payer eligibility, authorization documents and living wills.

The challenge for SNMH, and hospitals in general, is accessing the required documentation to support the claim adjudication process, when it is typically stored in multiple on-site/off-site locations, in different computer applications and in a variety of formats. The inability to quickly and easily retrieve the necessary documentation creates delays that ultimately impact the cash flow cycle. SNMH found a solution to this problem in BlueChip Technologies' Business Document Imaging System.

The BDIS gave Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital centralized access to all of the information needed to effectively manage the claims process resulting in claims being paid more rapidly, a reduction in off-site storage costs and more efficient customer service.

"In the short time since the implementation has been deployed, Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital has begun scanning all documentation related to the admission process at 45 different registration locations, using Fujitsu scanners and BlueChip Technologies' FrontOffice Capture software," said Bob Snyder, vice president of operations, BlueChip Technologies. "Hospital processes have been streamlined, eliminating much of the cost associated with storage and retrieval of paper documents while providing simultaneous viewing access for authorized users. The combination of the Fujitsu scanners and BlueChip Technologies' document imaging solution has helped the hospital realize an annual savings of $130,000 in operational expense."

"Fujitsu is thrilled to recognize BlueChip Technologies' outstanding document management installation with the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital," said Don McMahan, vice president of sales, Imaging Products Group, FCPA. "The pressure on the healthcare industry to modernize office processes is twofold. Like all businesses, there is a constant need to reduce costs associated with paper documents. Additionally, medical organizations like Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital are also bound to regulatory compliance standards such as HIPAA. The hospital's implementation is an excellent example for the entire industry on how an effective document management and imaging solution can reduce costs and improve operational efficiencies."
