Fujitsu Provides the Answers to Migration at Broadband World Forum 2008
Fujitsu's European launch of the FLASHWAVE® 9500 Packet ONP combines with its second generation MSAN solutions to provide a complete answer to network migration.
Birmingham, 30th September 2008 — Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe Limited (FTEL), a leading supplier of IT and Networking Solutions, is delivering a comprehensive set of answers for network migration on Stand No: 464 at this year's Broadband World Forum, taking place in Brussels from 29th September - 2nd October. Making its first European appearance is a new class of networking equipment, the FLASHWAVE® 9500 Packet Optical Networking Platform (Packet ONP). Based on Fujitsu's proven optical networking technology, the FLASHWAVE 9500 platform is specifically designed to deliver high-bandwidth, high quality packet-based services in a multi-protocol environment. It provides carrier-class packet-centric aggregation in conjunction with traditional transport, as the basis for highly scaleable, future-proofed networks.
Speaking at Fujitsu's press conference at Broadband World Forum Europe to launch the FLASHWAVE 9500 Packet ONP, VP Product
Planning Simon Rees explained:
"We believe bandwidth demand will continue to grow alongside customer expectations for enhanced services. With the FLASHWAVE
9500 Packet ONP, we have focused on creating a platform that can provide a cost-effective and scalable means of meeting bandwidth
requirements. Our plug-in ROADM approach enables bandwidth to be expanded to Terabit levels, without having to change out
the core infrastructure. And, by delivering connection-oriented Ethernet services from a converged platform also used for
SDH services, it allows a gradual migration path from TDM to Ethernet. Above all, the FLASHWAVE 9500 platform delivers on
the economic front by enabling massive levels of integration, reducing capital spend and operational costs. Combined with
our GeoStream Access Gateway Multi-Service Access Node (MSAN) and our extensive expertise across the most challenging network
migration applications, the FLASHWAVE 9500 Packet ONP represents the final link in the chain. As a result, Fujitsu is now
positioned to provide one of the most compelling and comprehensive propositions to address current and future network migration
challenges."
Central to the concept of the new FLASHWAVE 9500 platform is the ability to build an optical network for an uncertain future, without impacting on existing technology assets. The FLASHWAVE 9500 Packet ONP is the first type of network element to combine both shelf-wide packet aggregation – traditionally found only in more costly, feature-rich service elements – and robust bulk transport scalability. It incorporates an innovative switch fabric that allows both SDH and packet-based traffic to be switched and managed in native format, without any circuit emulation penalties, and with transition on demand to Ethernet services. Major space savings can be achieved with the platform’s high degree of integration, reducing equipment space by a factor of ten through a modular, chassis-level fusion of connection-oriented Ethernet, ROADM-on-a-card, and TDM/SDH. Its single-platform approach also reduces training costs and spares/inventory requirements, as well as yielding substantial power-per-bit savings compared to legacy equipment, and therefore helping to achieve increasingly aggressive environmental targets.
The technology behind the FLASHWAVE 9500 platform is based on Fujitsu's patent-pending universal TDM/Packet fabric, translated into a purpose-built modular design. Key features include:
- Connection-oriented Ethernet transport designed for private-line quality services, shelf-wide packet aggregation and Layer 2 traffic management.
- Plug-in ROADM-on-a-card delivers bulk bandwidth economically and with operational stability
- Next Generation TDM technology supports the full range of network services while retaining operational continuity with existing networks.
- High density multi-service, multi-rate TDM interfaces.
- 40 Gbps/100 Gbps-ready ROADM in one-quarter of a shelf.
- 480 Gbps TDM or packet bandwidth in only one-half of a rack.
The FLASHWAVE 9500 Packet ONP is designed to be deployed with Fujitsu’s market-leading GeoStream Access Gateway MSAN, which has been extensively proven across a wide range of demanding network applications, including within BT’s 21CN programme. Its advanced multi-service capabilities provide the common access platform for legacy services consolidation, such as POTS and ISDN, as well as new, high bandwidth broadband services catering for converged voice and IP, connected via a single Ethernet backhaul to an IP/MPLS Core. GeoStream Access Gateway incorporates Fujitsu’s latest overload protection mechanisms, addressing the requirement for robust overload mechanisms to handle volatile traffic rates. This allows PSTN services to be carried over next generation networks, in support of a strategy to mass-migrate customers from legacy, end-of-life platforms. The system can be installed in an exchange or in a remote street cabinet, allowing equipment to be located closer to the customer as bandwidth requirements increase.
