Fujitsu Advances Next Generation Networks at Broadband World Forum 2008

Fujitsu demonstrates end-to-end next generation network solutions, serving seamless voice and data mobility, from optical and copper through to wireless.

Birmingham, 2nd September 2008 — Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe Limited (FTEL), a leading supplier of IT and Networking Solutions, will be announcing the European launch of a new class of networking equipment, the FLASHWAVE® 9500 Packet Optical Networking Platform (Packet ONP), on Stand No: 464 at this year's Broadband World Forum, taking place in Brussels from 29th September - 2nd October.

By providing the fusion of ROADM, connection-oriented Ethernet and SDH technologies onto a single chassis, Packet ONPs enable massive levels of consolidation of both SDH and next generation carrier-class Ethernet Services. Tony Oppenheim, Chief Operating Officer of Fujitsu Telecommunication Europe's comments on the significance of Fujitsu's flagship FLASHWAVE 9500 Packet ONP for the European market:
"With bandwidth requirements expected to grow by 50% per annum for the foreseeable future, operators are faced with multiple challenges. If they invest in traditional transport platforms now, there is a serious risk of hard-edged transition and stranded assets in two to three years time. The scale of the required investment is escalating, just as transport methods are shifting from SDH to packet-based protocols. We believe that our FLASHWAVE 9500 platform sets the standard for Packet ONP, helping operators to manage these operational and financial challenges with a future-proofed, consolidated and low operational cost network infrastructure. It enables Fujitsu to provide a genuine end-to-end next generation solution, combining with our Multi-Service Access Node (MSAN) platform to deliver unprecedented levels of flexibility and performance across legacy and emerging services."

The FLASHWAVE 9500 Packet ONP applies Fujitsu’s proven optical networking technology to deliver carrier-class TDM and packet aggregation in combination with traditional transport. Its innovative switch fabric allows both SDH and packet-based traffic to be switched and managed in its native format, without any of the penalties of circuit emulation technology. Designed to support both SDH and Ethernet in native mode, the FLASHWAVE 9500 platform enables transition on demand between the two, and enables operators to build highly scaleable, future-proofed networks.

The FLASHWAVE 9500 Packet ONP is designed to be deployed with Fujitsu’s market leading MSAN, which already forms a central component of BT’s 21CN programme. Its advanced multi-service capabilities provide the common access platform for legacy services consolidation, such as POTS and ISDN, as well as new, high bandwidth broadband services catering for converged voice and IP connected via a single Ethernet backhaul to an IP/MPLS Core. With today’s highly volatile traffic rates – for example, driven by phone-in TV shows – robust overload mechanisms have become a mission-critical requirement for carrier class service. Fujitsu’s latest Overload protection mechanisms allow PSTN services to be carried over next generation networks with the confidence necessary to mass-migrate customers from legacy, end of life platforms.

Launched in Europe earlier this year, Fujitsu's BroadOne™ WX series of mobile WiMAX base stations represents one of the smallest, lightest and most power-efficient designs currently available, providing operators with a fast and easy-to-install, low maintenance in-service solution. The BroadOne WX300 mobile WiMAX base station recently won the prestigious 2008 Best of WiMAX World EMEA System Design Award and the Internet Telephony WiMAX Distinction Award.
