Fujitsu Launches Highly Flexible, Scalable Mobile WiMAX Base Stations

BroadOne™ WX300 Macrocell WiMAX Base Station

Birmingham, 6th February 2008 — Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe Limited today announced the launch of its new BroadOne™ WX series of mobile WiMAX base stations (BTS). Designed to be among the smallest, most power-efficient in the industry, the new base stations provide operators with an ideal in-service solution that offers fast, easy installation and maintenance. Fujitsu is positioning mobile WiMAX base stations as a key part of its product strategy for the fast-emerging global wireless broadband industry, and will be marketing the first in the series – the BroadOne WX300 outdoor macrocell – globally from the second quarter of 2008 (April - June).

Wireless broadband technology is intended to provide a communications revolution, with high-speed, high-capacity connectivity to next generation networks, allowing communication with anyone at any time. In Europe, Fujitsu regards this launch as a key element in its strategy, as Stavros Petrides, Chief Strategy Officer of Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe, explained:
“Fujitsu’s BroadOne WX series WiMAX offering is a flexible and high-efficiency solution, finely-tuned to the opportunities inherent in the 2.5GHz auctions scheduled during 2008. It is a perfect complement to our existing market strength in next generation networks, and is conceived from the ground up as a best-in-class solution that addresses the widest range of frequencies and operational conditions. The technology has the capability to lower OPEX by a significant margin, supporting operators who are already planning aggressive WiMAX roll-outs.”

Richard Bell, Head of Wireless Propositions at Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe, also commented:
“The addition of a compact, highly integrated WiMAX base station to our portfolio significantly consolidates our position as a vendor of choice for Next Generation Access technologies. Combined with our GeoStream Multi Service Access Platform, GeoStream Access Gateway Softswitch and experience in large-scale legacy network evolutions, operators have the flexibility to deploy Next Generation broadband solutions capable of serving seamless voice and data mobility from copper through to wireless.”

Mobile WiMAX provides up to 75Mbps of bandwidth and is certified by the WiMAX Forum as an industry standard. Fujitsu plans to sell three base station models designed for the 2.5GHz and 2.3GHz bands. Housed as a single, lightweight unit, the BroadOne WX300 outdoor macrocell base station is designed for wide-area transmissions over a radius of several kilometres. This will be the first model to go on sale, with global delivery in the second quarter of 2008. The second model, a compact outdoor microcell base station, is designed for transmissions over a several-hundred-metre radius, in areas with a lower concentration of users and remote areas with poor coverage. The third BroadOne WX series model is an indoor, ultra-compact picocell base station, providing broadband solutions for all types of environments.

The new BroadOne WX300 outdoor macrocell base station offers world-class performance, using highly efficient data transmission amplifiers that consume less power and utilise Fujitsu’s pioneering gallium nitride (GaN) High Electron Mobility Transistor (HEMT) technology. Gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductors are less susceptible to electrolysis damage when compared to conventional silicon and gallium arsenic (GaAs) semiconductors. The HEMT structure enables high-voltage, high-speed data processing, and its digital pre-distortion technology makes the base stations among the most power-efficient in the world.

Together, these technologies reduce power consumption by a significant margin compared to existing 3G systems, while raising transmission performance to world-class levels. In addition, the macrocell station employs MIMO technology, which enables the efficient transmission of large capacities of data. The macro station weighs only 20 kilograms, half that of 3G stations, with a volume of 20 litres, making it the smallest in its class and allowing a single person to install the system on a tower. The reduced size and improved energy efficiency greatly lowers the cost of installation and operation. A single casing houses all the station equipment, including the transceivers, the baseband processor and power devices, minimising installation and maintenance work.

Fujitsu has recently entered into an Alliance Agreement with Airspan Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: AIRN), a leading provider of fixed WiMAX equipment. Fujitsu and Airspan will share technology and resell each other’s WiMAX products to provide telecommunications customers with a complete line-up of world-class technology.
