Fujitsu Telecommunications Ireland Gains the Investors in People Standard

Birmingham, 21st September 2006 — Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe Ltd, the leading supplier of high performance telecommunications solutions, announces that its re-manufacturing and service division, Fujitsu Telecommunications Ireland, has been granted the Investors in People (IIP) Standard. Based in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, the division prides itself on high levels of employee satisfaction and underwent stringent IIP assessment earlier this year, involving a rigorous set of new criteria.

Fujitsu Telecommunications Ireland has focused on creating an open, supportive culture, and places great importance on training and development. Staff involvement is encouraged at all levels within the business, ensuring that everyone is aware of the value placed on individual contributions, and that all employees have an opportunity to play a key role in the company’s progress. The division was granted its original IIP status in 1996, with the accreditation being renewed every three years, underlining the success of this approach.

Within Fujitsu Telecommunications Ireland, the Investors in People accreditation process was handled by Terri Lees, the division’s Business Support Manager. She commented:

“Receiving Investors in People recognition is a major achievement for us. This time round, the process was very far from being a straightforward renewal of our previous accreditation – the assessment procedure is now more stringent than ever and we had to meet a number of new criteria. Confidential staff interviews conducted by the external assessment team played a vital part in the final result, with the positive feedback demonstrating the success of our team approach and the high morale that we try to engender in our workforce. We employ a cellular structure for our production and service line staff, with cell leaders and members meeting at the start of each day to discuss targets and the previous day’s performance. This creates a supportive atmosphere, enabling praise to be delivered swiftly, and any training issues to be aired and resolved efficiently. Staff satisfaction and motivation are critical elements in our corporate ethos, translating into a highly positive attitude towards Quality of Service for our customers. Recent contract wins have seen our workforce increase by some 25%, making it all the more important that we continue our people-oriented approach.”

Comments from employees that contributed to the IIP accreditation focused on the daily performance feedback provided by managers, and their availability for open discussion. It was also felt that effort was genuinely recognised and acknowledged, and that all steps were taken to ensure that appropriate training was offered and encouraged. The regularity of individual appraisals was also cited as a key factor in maintaining job satisfaction.

Fujitsu Telecommunications Ireland is based in a purpose-built 25,000 square-feet facility in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, and is located within minutes of Belfast International airport. The division’s prime focus is on the repair, refurbishment and re-manufacturing of electronic and electro-mechanical equipment – from business telephone systems and payphones, to leading-edge broadband technology and laptop computers. It also provides its telecommunications customers with specialist cable manufacturing services. Fujitsu Telecommunications Ireland helps customers to comply with WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) legislation, by enabling existing inventory to be re-utilised and returned to the marketplace, to maximise its profitable lifespan and minimise the need for premature disposal. In addition to being an Investors in People organisation, Fujitsu Telecommunications Ireland also holds a National Training Award, for its successful fast-track re-training programme to service and support advanced DSL systems.
