Fujitsu Announces Industry Leading Perpendicular 250GB(*1) 2.5” 5400RPM SATA Hard Disk Drive

Near-Silent Operation is Ideal for Portable Consumer Electronic Devices

London, 18th May 2007 — Fujitsu Europe Limited today announced the global launch of its MHY2xxxBH series mobile hard disk drive (HDD). The new Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) drive series is available in capacities of up to 250GB(*1) (model MHY2250BH), the industry’s highest capacity point in a 2.5” 5400RPM form factor HDD, and was developed in response to the growing demand for higher capacity storage products required for notebook PCs and consumer electronics. The first MHY2xxxBH samples will be available in the second quarter of 2007.

These latest Fujitsu SATA HDD’s were also developed for portable consumer electronics, where the key to success lies in reducing noise, vibration, and power consumption. These HDD’s address the demands of the rapidly developing high-end audio/video computing market, particularly in applications such as gaming, video editing, audio recording, and DVR functionality. Engineered using PMR technology, the new small form factor includes best-in-class power consumption at 0.6W (Idle), as well as near-silent operation.

“The new MHY2xxxBH series will expand the storage capacity of mobile products such as notebook PCs and portable video recorders (PVRs) in step with the surging growth of multimedia content and the rapidly changing mobile environment, while delivering the reliability that has made Fujitsu a technology leader in the storage industry,” said Georg Dietsch, Director Storage Products Group EMEA. “Fujitsu mobile hard drives are renowned for their exceptional performance and reliability, and this latest high-capacity SATA drive is yet another market leading product.”

Hard Disk Drive Specifications
Fujitsu designed the MHY2xxxBH hard disk drive series to provide specifications that are vital for today's mobile computing applications, including storage capacities of up to 250GB(*1) with a rotational speed of 5400RPM; SATA 1.5 Gbps (Rev 2.5) interface; and best-in-class idle power consumption of 0.6W and standby/sleep power consumption with an average of 0.13W. Its average track-to-track seek time is 1.5ms; with an average read/write seek time of 12/14 ms; and a maximum buffer-to-host transfer rate of 150MB/s. The MHY2xxxBH series acoustic noise level is 2.4 bels(*2) in idle mode whilst offering an operating shock tolerance of 325G (2ms).

(*1) One gigabyte (GB) = one billion bytes; accessible capacity will be less and actual capacity depends on the operating environment and formatting.
Buffer: Small portion of buffer memory is used for drive firmware control.
(*2) bel: A unit for indicating noise levels. 1 bel is equivalent to 10 decibels.
