Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe Demonstrates Multi-Service Access Node Flexibility at SOFNET 2008

Andy Stevenson, CEO, interviewed by TelecomTV about the role of next generation technologies in evolving today’s telco.

Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe Limited (FTEL) demonstrated its latest generation Multi-Service Access Node (MSAN) technology at SOFNET 2008 (28 April - 1 May) in London. The latest evolution of Fujitsu’s innovative GeoStream Access Gateway series was on show, incorporating the next generation Copper Multi-Service Access Node (CMSAN) technology with support for ADSL2+ services, as well as the established FBX Fibre MSAN (FMSAN) platform.

FTEL’s Chief Executive Officer Andy Stevenson highlighted the evolving role of the MSAN, commenting:
"Carriers are facing a major challenge in how best to design an efficient network that can carry all of the existing services to customers, while at the same time being flexible enough to build new services on the infrastructure as new technologies emerge. Our MSAN concept allows carriers to focus on the services they want to deliver, rather than the issues surrounding new technologies, and sits at the very heart of Fujitsu’s product portfolio – built around our GeoStream Access Gateway FDX and FBX platforms, as well as Flashwave 9500. We believe that with the latest advances in MSAN technology, we are enabling an amazing new generation of services that will fundamentally change the way our industry looks. Equally, as we see carriers starting to deploy MSANs, the truly exciting element is the knock-on effect that this has on the applications sector, with developers starting to exploit the MSAN’s inherent capabilities. They will be offering consumers, SMEs and businesses a much richer and truly integrated fixed and mobile experience – from converged TV, Video, Data and Voice packages, to integrating WiMAX into the MSAN concept."

MSAN Evolution with GeoStream Access Gateway

A key component in the BT 21CN programme, Fujitsu’s GeoStream Access Gateway provides a common platform for the support of fibre and copper terminations across a wide range of existing and next-generation services to end-users. The multi-service capability of the GeoStream Access Gateway offers support for the widest breadth of service delivery, including ADSL, ADSL2, ADSL2+, SDSL, VDSL, Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, PON, GPON, WiMAX, SDH and PDH – all from the same platform, vastly reducing the operational cost of the Access Network.

The latest GeoStream Access Gateway CMSAN, shown at SOFNET, handles ISDN2 and ISDN30 services, in addition to ADSL2+, and significantly incorporates an aggregator – the Aggregator MSAN (AMSAN). This enables Broadband traffic from individual CMSANs to be concentrated into a single backhaul, with up to three CMSANs supported from a single AMSAN – designed for larger exchanges handling up to 22 thousand lines per system, and underlining the scalability of Fujitsu’s technology concept. In addition, the latest CMSAN developments include a new Integrated Voice line card, further extending the scope and functionality of Fujitsu’s line card portfolio.

Broadband Voice Applications

Demonstrating the burgeoning applications for broadband voice, Fujitsu has teamed up with its long-standing partners at MetaSwitch to demonstrate how broadband voice applications can bring a significant new set of capabilities to an underlying converged voice capability. By providing an applications platform with an open API, Fujitsu and MetaSwitch create an environment for the ubiquitous access to voice and unified communications via applications development, or web-based ‘mashups’, which integrate key features such as click-to-dial, user self-management and directory services into any number of third party applications. Also provided in the extended feature set are unified communications including voicemail, conferencing, incoming call management, SIP phone auto configuration/provisioning and enhanced business group applications. Broadband Voice Applications are available with underlying MetaSwitch platforms, or as standalone feature servers in their own right.
