Getting to grips with the data centre
Can managed services come to the rescue?
Mark Poley

There’s no doubt about it, data centres are causing real anxiety for organisations around the world. Quite simply, many are struggling to cope. Responding to a survey by the Business Performance Management (BPM) Forum, half of IT professionals admitted that their organisation had already run out of space, power or cooling capacity.
Financial constraints are only exacerbating the problem, with 20% of organisations spending more than £500,000 a year on energy consumption and 8% forking out more than £5 million.
But how exactly are IT departments responding to these complex challenges? For many, managed services offer a potential solution.
Glenn Fitzgerald, Fujitsu’s Data Centre Services Champion, explains: “Very few organisations can claim that power efficiency is a core competency. By outsourcing data centre requirements – and pooling storage and computing needs with shared services – they can cut costs, gain a higher level of service and reduce their carbon footprint at the same time.”
