For many organisations that have already reaped huge benefits from the virtualisation of their server estate, virtualising the desktop looms large as the next logical step in the drive for IT efficiency. But, while adopting the server virtualisation model may have been something of a “no-brainer”, CIOs are faced with a much more complex set of choices when selecting the virtualised desktop architecture that best suits their operational needs.

In some cases the technology is mature and proven; in others, it is barely out of the labs. As that highlights, desktop virtualisation is not a single technology – far from it: there are several very different architectural approaches to virtualising the desktop that have very different use cases, benefits and drawbacks. And organisations need to select the appropriate mix of application virtualisation, application hosting, platform hosting, cloud services and several other options if they are to attain the promised paybacks and competitive advantage.

At the same time, there are questions about sofware licensing, energy savings and service models that will also infuence the potential and direction for PC virtualisation.
