The Solution

The Department of Health is responsible for improving the health and well being of the people of England, by securing the provision of comprehensive, high quality health care for all those who need it.

In late 1998, the Department began to assess how it could develop a practical methodology that would enable its business groups to:

  • capture and share their knowledge
  • reduce the time spent finding information
  • improve overall responsiveness

The Solution

By drawing on its considerable experience of knowledge management, including its own company-wide initiative, Fujitsu enabled the Department of Health to mobilise its knowledge through the development of a knowledge management toolkit.

The Knowledge, Learning and Information Management Toolkit (KLIMT) provides a clear methodology that sets out detailed steps on how work groups can improve the way they work, by sharing the knowledge and experience of their people.

The Implementation

The first phase of the KLIMT project involved an assessment of how the Department of Health currently utilised its information. Fujitsu undertook a series of assessment workshops and interviews with three of the Department's business groups, in order to refine and develop the aims of the KLIMT.

Fujitsu was then able to apply its knowledge management approach to prepare the Project Initiation Document, which detailed the proposed timetable, processes and methods for the KLIMT program.

Having defined the initial structure for KLIMT, Fujitsu and the Department of Health then began an Evaluation Phase to gather objective evidence concerning the program's value in the workplace.

The Benefits

KLIMT is a practical methodology that provides immediate benefits at a working level. It is helping the Department of Health to work smarter, by:

  • improving access to comprehensive and accurate information and knowledge
  • promoting cross boundary working so that wheels are not re-invented
  • increasing the speed with which staff can respond to requirements

Fujitsu is now developing a number of 'real life' case studies on the use of KLIMT, as well as transferring the necessary skills to enable the Department to roll-out the program.
