Green teams

From entrepreneurialism to collective action
We have had a network of green teams in our different offices for a number of years. These relied chiefly on the efforts of a group of motivated pioneers who brought considerable commitment and zeal to our environmental efforts.
Initially, therefore, our focus was on empowering these staff to take action on a local level. This manifested itself in activities like campaigns on saving water, switching off equipment and lights, and recycling. We also promoted national events through the green teams such as ‘Bike to Work’ weeks and ‘In Town Without Your Car’ Days.
Extending our impact outside the office, we have developed links with several green business clubs, through which we worked with other companies to enable small and medium enterprises to become more environmentally aware and also to offer help with practical matters like recycling.
Increasingly, however, we have appreciated the need for a more coordinated approach and so we are now rolling out a more formal network of Green Teams across the company. These, we are sure, will take our office-based efforts on to a new level.
