Usage Of 16 X DVD-RAM Disc (RAM2 Disc)

DVD Forum¹ has introduced DVD-RAM2, a new DVD-RAM format. The DVD-RAM2 disc, called the RAM2 disc, will soon be released into the markets.

The RAM2 disc is not compatible with optical drives which do not support DVD-RAM2 format. I.E. the optical drive will not be able to access the RAM2 disc if it is inserted into the optical drive. To playback or record data on the RAM2 disc, you have to use an optical drive that supports DVD-RAM2 format. Such optical drives should have the following RAM2 logo on it.

RAM2

Please do not use RAM2 disc with your computer if you cannot find RAM2 logo on the optical drive. Always check the format of the disc before you purchase it or put it into your optical drive.

Caution

The following incidents may happen if you put RAM2 disc into the optical drive of your Fujitsu computer which does not bear RAM2 logo:

  1. DVD tray may eject automatically and the RAM2 disc may spin for a while.
  2. Your computer may hang.
  3. DVD tray may fail to eject when you press the Load/Eject button.

How To Recover From The Above Incidents

If any of the above incidents happen, please follow the instructions below to remove the RAM2 disc from the optical drive.

  1. Press the power button or main switch to turn off the computer. Please read carefully the details of this procedure in the user’s manual of your computer.

  2. In the event that the DVD tray is ejected, remove the RAM2 disc from it after the RAM2 disc has stopped spinning.
On the other hand, if the DVD tray is not ejected, insert a long and narrow tip into the hole near the Load/Eject button of the DVD tray to draw out the tray. Remove the RAM2 disc from the tray after the RAM2 disc has stopped spinning. If you cannot find the hole on the tray, press the power button to restart your computer and immediately press the Load/Eject button (this must be done within 5 seconds) to draw out the DVD tray. Remove the RAM2 disc from the tray after the RAM2 disc has stopped spinning. Please read carefully the details of this procedure in the user’s manual of your computer.

Please note that when a RAM2 disc is spinning in an ejected DVD tray, do not touch it or attempt to remove it from the tray. Always wait for the RAM2 disc to stop spinning before removing it from the tray. If you touch or attempt to remove a spinning RAM2 disc in the ejected tray, you may injure your hand and fingers.

Recommendations

If you have any of the above Fujitsu computers, we recommend that you download the Firmware Update Tool. This Firmware Update Tool will automatically check the possibility of the above incidents occurring based on the type of DVD optical drive of your computer, and will upgrade the optical drive firmware if applicable.

Please note, however, that the upgraded firmware does not make the optical drive compliant to DVD-RAM2 standard, nor does it make the optical drive compatible with RAM2 disc. The upgraded firmware can help to prevent the occurrence of the above incidents when a RAM2 disc is put into your computer DVD optical drive.

Please click here for Firmware Update Tool.
