Fujitsu sets supercomputer goal

Singapore, June 24 ,2005 — Fujitsu Ltd, the Japanese supplier of computer servers and telecommunications equipment, plans to build the world's fastest supercomputer by the end of 2010.

The new computer will be capable of as many as 3 petaflops, equal to the combined computing power of 500,000 3GHz PCs, Akira Yamanaka, the company's vice-president and head of the server business; said yesterday at a news conference in Tokyo. It will be used for bio and nanotechnology research, and simulations by carmakers and precision-equipment manufacturers, he said.

One petaflop equals 1,000 trillion mathematical operations a seconds.

The Tokyo-based company's supercomputer would surpass International Business Machines Corp's Blue Gene and NEC Copr's Earth Simulator in the race to meet rising computational requirements in business and scientific research. IBM, which now has the fastest supercomputer, last year spent US$ 5.67 billion on research in the business.

The company didn't say how much it will invest in the project. But Fujitsu will seek financial support from the Japanese government and ohter companies, because the investment burden for the development would be "difficult to bear", said Mr Yamanaka.

The company currently spends as much as 40 billion yen (S$615 million) a year on supercomputer research, he said. --- Bloomberg
