Fujitsu to Work with Intel to Develop New Mission-Critical Enterprise Servers

Strategic Collaboration Aims for Fujitsu To Deliver Mainframe-Class Intel-Based Linux Servers in 2005

Tokyo, 24 January 2003 — Fujitsu Limited and Intel Corporation today announced a major strategic collaboration to develop mission-critical enterprise servers that target the highest ends of the worldwide computing market. The new Fujitsu systems, which will contain industry standard Intel-based processors and run Linux and Windows operating systems, will complement Fujitsu’s Unix- and mainframe-based mission-critical enterprise platform offerings.

Fujitsu, a global leader in large-scale, mission-critical computing platforms, aims to make available Intel® Xeon™ processor DP and MP family systems based on the collaboration from the end of 2004, followed by large multi-processor systems based on future versions of the Intel® Itanium® processor family by the end of 2005. These systems, which will build upon the company’s current high-reliability, high-performance Intel-based server offerings, will scale up to the most sophisticated, 128 processor-capable mainframe-class systems.

To support the collaborative effort, and following on its Linux business strategy announcement last October, Fujitsu has created a new Linux systems organizational structure under its Enterprise Systems Group. Comprising over 300 engineers and capitalizing on Fujitsu’s mission-critical systems expertise, including interconnect, clustering, autonomous systems and grid computing technologies, the organization is focusing on providing hardware platforms and core software that improve the reliability, availability and scalability of Linux-based enterprise systems.

To promote greater business opportunities in the mission-critical server market, Fujitsu and Intel will work together and with the Linux community to enhance Linux reliability, functionality and performance. The companies plan to use Intel’s suite of software tools to accelerate efforts with key ISVs to optimize Linux applications on Fujitsu’s Intel-based systems.
