Fujitsu offers a system solution based on the accumulated knowledge of WiMAX technologies and the full experience of the baseband development and mass production of 2G and 3G mobile handsets. The MAC and PHY for mobile WiMAX SoC are optimized for use in mobile stations and terminals, PC cards and other media-rich handheld devices, and are assured of meeting carrier-class requirements.

MB86K23 allows a 60% reduction in chip-set area compared to its predecessor. When combined into a chip-set with FME’s RF device, MB86K52, and power management LSI, MB39C316, very small form-factors can be realised 20 x 40mm for WiMAX USB dongles or 30 x 26.8mm for PCI Express Half-Mini Cards containing both WiMAX and Wi-Fi functionality.

The WiMAX standard enables system vendors to create many different types of WiMAX-based products, including indoor and outdoor CPEs, as well as mobile handsets in the forms similar to the traditional cell phones. To address the increasing demands of attractive Mobile WiMAX handsets, and foreseeing the difficulty of including WiMAX into an already complicated mobile handset design, Fujitsu now introduces its 2nd generation chipset target to enable module vendors to modulize hardware components that are necessary for a Mobile WiMAX handset, into an easy and concise single package.
The chipset includes a baseband LSI, the MB86K22; an RF LSI, the MB86K52; and a power management LSI, the MB39C316.

The Fujitsu MB86K21 WiMAX SoC is a cost-effective, fully integrated MAC and PHY mixed-signal baseband processor for WiMAX Mobile Stations. Fujitsu's WiMAX SoC is compliant with IEEE 802.16e-2005 targeted to be the first in its class to participate in WiMAX Forum Wave 2 certification.

The RF module, MB86K71, includes RF-IC, antenna switches, a power amplifier, filters, and an oscillator circuit. This RF module supports MIMO(*) technology, thereby enabling high-speed and reliable wireless connections that are essential for Mobile WiMAX devices. Furthermore, Fujitsu also has verified that this RF module can be connected to the baseband chip, MB86K21.
(*) MIMO: Multiple Input Multiple Output. A technology that uses multiple antennas at both the transmitter and receiver to improve high-speed communication performance.
