Primary School Students go Green with Aquarium project
Singapore, November 1, 2007 — This is the ultimate aquarium fish enthusiast dream come true: an aquarium that requires you to change the water in the tank only once in two years. Those who have resisted the urge to have a fish tank because of the hassle of regular cleaning can now take a cue from the students of Princess Elizabeth Primary School.
Winner of the Silver Award for Waste Minimisation Competition 2006 and 3Rs Gold Award 2006, Princess Elizabeth Primary School is the first and only school in Singapore to boast of an ecologically-balanced aquarium that requires minimum maintenance and water wastage. Installed in August 2007, the aquarium features an unique filtration system where students need only change the water once every two years, as compared to once in two months or even less for normal tanks, translating to a saving of 4,550 litres of water over two years.
Says twelve-year-old Nikita Borate, Head of the Environmental Club at Princess Elizabeth: "My friends and I are very, very proud of our Princess Aquarium. It is not only beautiful to look at but also teaches us about the interdependence of the aquatic community as well as the recycling of waste in an aquarium. It makes learning about our environment more fun and meaningful."
The Princess Aquarium as it is affectionately called was conceived by students of Princess Elizabeth’s Environmental Club in conjunction with Clean & Green Singapore (CGS) 2007. For their efforts, the Princess Aquarium won third spot in the Primary School Category of this year’s CGS Environment Project Competition.
Adds Mrs Mary Ngiam Siew Wah, Principal of Princess Elizabeth Primary School: “Through the school’s recycling efforts, our pupils are taught about the issues and the importance of their active participation in reducing the strain on our planet. Ultimately, these are lessons which our young ones will bring with them through life.”
This innovative aquarium project is one of the school’s joint initiatives with its corporate partner Fujitsu Microelectronics Asia, and is aimed at preserving and conserving the environment under the National Environment Agency’s Corporate and School Partnership Programme. The partnership with Princess Elizabeth Primary School is part of the company’s commitment towards greater corporate and social ownership of the environment.
“At the grassroots level, we believe the simplest of efforts to care for the environment will go a long way. The aquarium project teaches young students the importance of water conservation, which hopefully, will spark in their minds other conservation ideas that can help preserve our environment,” said Mr Shinichi Machida, President of Fujitsu Microelectronics Asia Pte Ltd.
“By supporting such initiatives, it allows Fujitsu Microelectronics Asia to play a more active role in preserving a healthy environment that can be passed on to future generations”.
Princess Elizabeth Primary School will be presented their award at the CGS Schools Carnival, which will be held at Suntec City on 6 November 2007.
