Fujitsu Introduces Two New RISC Microcontrollers for Digital Home Electronics

High-Performance 32-bit Architecture, 50 MHz Maximum Operating Frequency

Tokyo, 19 September 2002 — Fujitsu Limited today introduced two new 32-bit RISC microcontrollers that are designed to run digital home appliances, such as audio equipment, digital televisions and DVD players. Jointly developed with Fujitsu VLSI Limited, the two new additions to Fujitsu's MB91350 (MB91F353 and MB91F355) series, the operating frequency at speeds up to 50 MHz, bringing a new level of performance to microcontrollers. Both new models are being marketed starting today, with sample shipment beginning in October.

In recent years, the performance level of home electronic appliances has reached a new stage of complexity, with many products featuring built-in functions to handle such tasks as TCP/IP support for Internet connectivity and JPEG image processing. As a result, the microcontrollers that drive these appliances are required to store larger, more complex programs and execute them more swiftly. At a more technical level, there has emerged a growing need for a high-performance serial interface to control devices that handle video and audio processing.

Fujitsu's MB91350 series of microcontrollers was developed to address these needs, with a 32-bit RISC architecture, built-in flash memory, high operating frequency, and a serial interface with multiple independent channels.

Principal features of Fujitsu's new microcontrollers include:

  • Maximum operating frequency of 50 MHz enables 64 MIPS performance, roughly 20 times the speed of Fujitsu's 16-bit CISC-based microcontrollers (3 MIPS).
  • A rich serial interface with nine full channels (on the MB91F355) for ease of AV processing system control.
  • Built-in 32 KHz clock and clock gearing to provide an array of power management functions and lower power consumption.
  • Stored programs are compressed to make them as compact as those for 16-bit CISC microcontrollers.

Fujitsu remains committed to enhancing its line of microcontrollers. Through the ongoing development of memory technologies and package line-ups incorporating built-in flash memory.

Fujitsu will continue to strengthen its line-up of high-performance microcontrollers for digital home appliances, audio-video equipment and PC peripherals by reducing surface area and parts count.
