Fujitsu and III to Explore Collaboration in Semiconductor Business
Companies announce patent cross-license and settle all pending litigation
Taipei, Taiwan / Tokyo, Japan, 10 July 2002 — Fujitsu Limited and Institute for Information Industry (III) today announced that they have reached an agreement to explore co-development collaboration in the following three areas.
The collaboration areas are :
- Co-development of Media-rich PDA Solution (Linux based) utilizing Fujitsu "FR-V" processor
- Co-development of common platform for 3G mobile SIM
- Co-development of FRAM (Ferroelectric Random Access Memory)*(1)applicative products
The collaboration is aimed to strengthen both Fujitsu's and Taiwan industry's global competitiveness and accelerate the time to bring new semiconductor products to the market by combining Fujitsu's and III's complementary development strength.
Specific collaboration model for each area is under investigation by each working groups, and today, detail conditions for the first collaboration area as Media-rich PDA Solution was agreed by both party.
Fujitsu provides FR-V platform that consists of AXE's axLinux operating system * (2)and Fujitsu's media middleware, which make the most of FR-V's media performance. Utilizing this, III will port media players on it and develop PDA applications. This collaboration enables the most advanced media rich PDA solution that features extensibility and flexibility on software base.
Fujitsu is a global IT technology provider having state-of-the-art technology. III has excellent marketing strength, especially in Chinese-speaking area, and software engineer resource. Capitalizing these strengths will enable both parties to meet rapidly changing market demands more quickly, which will not only contribute to Fujitsu's business expansion or Taiwan industry's prosperity, but benefit customers enormously.

- FRAM is a registered trademark of Ramtron International Corporation. All other company/ product names mentioned may be trademarks or registered trademarks of their respective holders.

- axLinux is a Linix-based operating system developed and offered by AXE for embedded and mobile applications. Kernel tuning and debugging are carried out independently.
