Fujitsu Asia Pte Ltd
Singapore, November 24, 2008 — Leading regional IT and communications solutions provider Fujitsu Asia today announced two new series of Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) hard disk drives (HDDs) for enterprise applications.
The MBD2 RC and MBE2 RC series of 2.5-inch enterprise HDDs are rated at 10,025 revolutions per minute (rpm) and 15,000 rpm respectively. The MBD2 RC series offers storage capacities of 147 gigabytes (GB) and 300 GB, while the MBE2 RC series includes 73.5 GB and 147 GB models.
The high storage capacities are realised via perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology. Unlike conventional longitudinal magnetic recording techniques, in which information is stored parallel to the surface of a HDD, PMR technology aligns magnetic charges perpendicular to the disk surface. This allows a HDD to store data using smaller bit sizes, for higher storage densities and capacities.
Developed in line with Fujitsu’s Green Policy Innovation program to promote energy-efficient IT products and services, the new HDD lines set new industry benchmarks for energy efficiency and environmental conservation. In idle mode, the MBD2 RC and MBE2 RC series require a maximum of 3.4 watts and 4.1 watts of power respectively – indicating industry-leading energy efficiency. The two new HDD series are also Fujitsu’s first halogen-free enterprise HDD lines, making them environmentally-friendly products throughout their entire lifecycles.
Both series conform to the new SAS-2 interface standard and support a maximum data throughput rate of 6 gigabits per second (Gbps), twice that of the original SAS specification. The two new HDD lines also provide internal data transfer rates that are 60 per cent higher than that offered by earlier HDDs from Fujitsu Asia.
“As climate change and environmental conservation emerge at the forefront of the global agenda, there has been a growing push for high-performance and high-reliability enterprise HDDs that incorporate environmentally-friendly characteristics. There has also been increasing interest in 2.5-inch enterprise HDDs that can deliver superior performance compared to their 3.5-inch counterparts. Fujitsu is responding to these twin needs with the MBD2 RC and MBE2 RC series, both of which support the 6Gbps SAS-2 interface and comply with our stringent environmental policy,” said Mr Loh Chong Shing, Regional Senior Vice President of Fujitsu Asia.
With a 16MB buffer and short read/write times, the new HDD lines are ideal for mission-critical server or high-capacity storage applications requiring high data throughput, low power consumption and other benefits.

The MBD2 RC and MBE2 RC series of enterprise HDDs will be available for the ASEAN (including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam) and India markets from Q1 and Q2 2009 respectively. Visit http://www.fujitsu.com/sg or call 6512-7555 for more details.
(*1) 1GB is equivalent to 1 billion bytes, or 1,000,000,000 bytes. Usable storage capacity is actually less than this figure. Actual storage capacity may vary depending on the environment and formatting of the customer's system.
(*2) Some buffer memory will be used by the firmware controller.
