FDDRL is a physical data backup and restore product for magnetic disks in BS2000 format. FDDRL runs as a subsystem under BS2000. In a physical data backup run using FDDRL, all data required for an operational and consistent pubset (disk label, file catalog, files, paging files, IPL capability) is saved; which is also the case with private disks (DUMP).
When the MAREN tape management product is used, the backup tapes generated by FDDRL are archived by MAREN, and can be differentiated by storage locations. The saved data can be used to restore the same disk volume on another disk of the same type (RELOAD). If the copy function (COPY) is used, the backup copies can be used directly as replacement disks.
FDDRL offers the user a modern SDF interface.. In a single FDDRL run, several tape units can be used side by side by means of parallel subtasks in order to reduce backup times. To reduce the number of data volumes used for backups, FDDRL also offers data compression using software or hardware mechanisms (MTC unit). To reduce outage times due to backup activities, FDDRL supports backup from split-off mirror disks.
With the Disk-Set backup unit, multiple disks can be backed up to one tape/tapeset and restored from there.
The Disk-Set backup unit was introduced with FDDRL V16.0. Large tape blocks are created. The block size is approx. 160 KB, irrespective of the maximum I/O size of the individual disks. Multiple disks are saved to a tape series with (in V16.0) dual multiplexing between disk and tape. A multiplexing factor of 4 is supported for the Disk-Set backup unit in FDDRL V17.0. This also enables support for configurations in which the throughput rate of the tape device cannot be reached by concurrently backing up only 2 disks (e.g. LTO-4). With a multiplexing factor of 4, the overall throughput can therefore be doubled in the ideal case.
