Fujitsu Launches a System on Chip for Multimedia Processing using embedded FR-V processor with MMU (MB93461)

Standard Linux for MMU is supported

Singapore, 23 July 2004 — Fujitsu Microelectronics Asia Pte Ltd introduces “MB93461᾿, first of the “FR 450 series᾿ of the SoC (System on Chip) products using “FR450 core᾿, a programmable media processor that incorporates a MMU(1). The SoC “MB93461᾿ is a highly integrated chip with resources like the FR-V core, video, audio, communication on a single chip. In addition, two bridge chips “MB93441᾿ and “MB93443᾿ were also developed to provide the additional interfaces like PCI, IDE and PC Card interface.

MB93461᾿ and the bridge chips were developed to meet the ever changing demands and flexibility on video/audio data compression techniques in the Digital A/V and Multimedia arena. It enables MPEG-4 encoding/decoding in VGA size (640x480 dots), suitable for digital AV equipment such as TV, highly functional IP Set Top Box, IP Video telephone and Portable Media Centre.

In the Personal Video Recorder, a higher compression technique is required so as to store a longer video clip in smaller memory storage. In the broadband and internet arena, a better compression technique will provide a better quality video and audio to be transmitted over the internet like in the video phone application. With the programming flexibility, we are able to meet the demands of various compression techniques in the Personal Media Centre and IP Set Top Box.

MB93461᾿ will be the first SoC based on “FR450 core᾿ which supports standard Linux that requires the MMU. “FR450(2)᾿ is backward compatible to the media processing processor core “FR405᾿ that we have offered until now. This allows user to use Linux that is running on PC platform onto “MB93461᾿ platform which is a highly portable development platform. This will be a Linux system that can be easily customized for the embedded communication and multimedia processing.

Red Hat, Inc.(3) will be providing the Linux support based on its development environment, “Linux for FR450 series᾿ and embedded system development environment “GNUPro.(4)᾿ .

Features of “MB93461᾿

  • More advanced function and lower power consumption is enabled.
MB93461᾿ doubles processing performance of existing SoC product “MB93423᾿ and uses half the power consumption. In a 30-frame-per-second video recording of MPEG-4(5) in QVGA size (320 x 240 dots), this can be achieved with “MB93461᾿. In the case of the playback of MP3(6) audio, the required power consumption is approximately 50 mw. “MB93461᾿ is a SoC that integrates the input/output function of “FR450᾿ and companion chip(7) MB93495 such as video and audio, and USB (Universal Serial Bus) host on a single chip.

Key Features of “MB93441᾿ and “MB93443᾿

We have developed 2 kinds of bridge chips which is directly connectable to the “FR-V Family᾿ processors. These bridge chips make it easy to extend peripheral interface function such as LAN, USB, macro drive and PC card.

  • ᾿MB93441᾿ : supports PCI(8) at 33MHz and 66MHz. Up to 4 PCI devices such as LAN and USB can be connected.
  • ᾿MB93443᾿ : supports IDE(9) device such as micro drive or the connection of 16-bit PC card.
