fFujitsu Introduces New High-Performance 8-bit Microcontroller For Digital Appliances

Employs Ultra-Compact, 64-pin Bump Chip Carrier Packaging

Singapore, 24 May 2002 — Fujitsu Microelectronics Asia Pte Ltd (FMAL) today announced the introduction of its new 8-bit microcontroller, the MB89F538L, which includes 48 Kbytes of flash memory and comes in a compact 0.8 mm-high BCC-64 package with a 9 x 9 mm footprint. Developed jointly with Kyushu Fujitsu Electronics Ltd., the new product is ideal for use as a sub-controller in digital appliances, such as digital cameras and DVD recorders. It is the newest addition to the F 2MC-8L family of 8-bit microcontrollers, all of which feature a wide choice of on-chip functions and peripheral blocks.

As digital cameras, DVD recorders, and other digital consumer electronics have grown more sophisticated in recent years, needs have increased for high performance, highly compact sub-controller to handle the user interface and other control functions.

Fujitsu's MB89F538L comes in a compact BCC-64 with a 9 x 9 mm footprint and a height of only 0.8 mm, making it suitable for smaller printed circuit board designs. With 48 KB of flash memory on the die, the new device can handle single power-source program re-writes on the circuit board, thereby significantly raising the speed and efficiency of program development.

Fujitsu will continue to expand its line of compact microprocessors for home-entertainment equipment, digital appliances, and PC peripherals as it works to reduce circuit-board space requirements, part counts, and board design complexity.

Main Specifications of the MB89F538L:

Process technology: 0.5 µm CMOS
Power-supply voltage: 2.4-3.6 V
Clock rate: 12.5 MHz
Onboard memory: 48 KB (flash Memory) 2 KB (RAM) *flash memory guaranteed for 10,000 rewrites
