Fujitsu Sponsors Four Filipino Professionals to Post-graduate Management Training Program in Asia-Pacific

Philippines has most number of scholars sponsored by Fujitsu

Manila, June 3, 2003 — Fujitsu Limited, leading provider of customer-focused IT and communications solutions for the global marketplace that is headquartered in Tokyo, is sponsoring four scholars from the Philippines this year for its scholarship grant that provides post-graduate education and cross-cultural management training to qualified participants.

The Philippines, through Fujitsu Philippines, Inc., has the highest number of Fujitsu scholars in school year 2003-2004 than any other country in the Asia-Pacific region. This includes Australia, Cambodia, China, Hawaii, Hongkong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. Fujitsu has sponsored 30 Filipino scholars since 1985, also the highest number of scholars among the 18 participating countries in the region.

The Fujitsu Asia Pacific Scholarship (Fujitsu Scholarship) Program, sponsored by Fujitsu, provides financial assistance for full tuition, medical insurance, airfare, and monthly stipend for living expenses to participants from the Asia-Pacific region. Fujitsu established the Asia-Pacific scholarship to commemorate its 50th anniversary in 1985.

ICT scholarships

The FAPSP program is one of the significant social programs of Fujitsu Limited. In addition, FPI, as part of the company’s social responsibility to help uplift ICT education in the Philippines, offers two more scholarship programs.

“We provide high-quality ICT and management knowledge and education to Filipinos, in the hope of providing our citizenry with the skills and the tools to cross the digital divide. Our business cannot expect to prosper in the long-term, unless the Philippines also prospers. Because our business is dependent on people and talent, we are committed to support social programs that focus on education,” said Mr. Shigeo Tsubotani, FPI Chairman.

These other major scholarship programs include the Fujitsu College Scholarship Grant, started in 1990, to support deserving but economically disadvantaged university students as they pursue a course leading to a bachelor's degree in Computer Science or any related field of ICT.

FPI recognizes its responsibility to develop the software talent base of the local ICT industry. It launched the Information Technology Training Program in 1998, conducted twice a year and open to the general public free-of-charge on a competitive basis. The ITTP is a three-month program, consisting of programming foundation courses (such as C, C++, Visual Basic, and Java).

“These two programs are opportunities for the incoming graduates in ICT for them to have better access to jobs, given the sufficient training and exposure on advance computer education that is being offered free-of-charge,” Mr. Felipe R. Manalang, FPI President.

"Mr. Shigeo Tsubotani, FPI Chairman, stresses a point on Fujitsu's Scholarship Programs during the recently concluded press conference held at Hotel Intercontinental, Makati."

JAIMS Scholarship

The management scholarship program is available for academic programs at JAIMS—the Japan-America Institute of Management Science. JAIMS, located in Honolulu, Hawaii, is a nonprofit postgraduate institute established by Fujitsu in 1972. Participants study the American, Japanese and Chinese cultures and their different approaches to management. Many Fujitsu Scholarship recipients/graduates are now working for corporate and social-service organizations in their home countries, as well as in other nations.

The Program is available for the following three academic programs:

The Japan-focused MBA (JEMBA) is a 15-month, Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB)-accredited master of business administration degree program offered by JAIMS and the College of Business Administration, University of Hawaii at Manoa. The AACSB accreditation represents the highest standard of achievement for business schools worldwide. The JEMBA program consists of core MBA courses, advanced Japan-focused courses, intensive business Japanese language study, and a three-month business internship in Japan. The program begins in early August of each year.

The China-focused MBA (CHEMBA) is a 15-month, AACSB-accredited master of business administration degree program also offered by JAIMS and the (College of Business Administration, University of Hawaii at Manoa. It consists of core MBA courses, advanced China-focused courses, intensive business Mandarin language study, and a three-month business internship in China. The program also begins in early August of each year

The Intercultural Management Program (ICMP) is a four-month graduate diploma program at JAIMS that trains non-English speakers about American business management. Global business and intercultural issues are also explored. ICMP consists of coursework in Honolulu and one week in Japan. All courses are in English. The program is offered twice a year, beginning in April and September.

This year, two Filipino professionals for the ICMP program will begin their program in September 2003, and two for the CHEMBA program, who will begin in August 2003.

“The focused courses on American, Chinese, and Japanese industries and management combined with the intensive Japanese language training in the JEMBA Program give a priceless contribution to the future career development of Filipino professionals to make them ready for the international business arena,” claimed Mr. Tsubotani.

“The very practical courses within the three scholarship programs have given the Filipino scholars and alumni a definite advantage,” added Mr. Manalang. “They have a broad range of skills that are proving invaluable in working within the context of the unprecedented transitions and change currently taking place in the Philippines and the rest of the countries in Southeast Asia.”
