Company acquires Fujitsu servers to run critical applications

In the global manufacturing marketplace, generating products based on international standards is a drive to make a brand synonymous to excellence. With this drive in mind, Yazaki-Torres Manufacturing, Inc adopts state-of-the-art production systems and technologies to produce premium high-quality products such as automotive wiring harness, automotive gauges and instruments, PVC electrical insulation tapes, ignition cord sets, and battery cables.

Yazaki-Torres acquired a number of Fujitsu hardware products: Fujitsu teamserver G870i used as groupware server, running Teamware office that include Teamware Mail and Teamware Flow; Fujitsu teamserver C310i to run as Internet and firewall server; and, Fujitsu GP7000 highly reliable enterprise server powered by the latest 64-bit SPARC64GP processors to run its manufacturing applications.

"We need a hardware to always conform to our growing requirements. Taking into consideration the cost of the hardware, we chose Intel-based Fujitsu teamservers and SPARC-based GP7000 because we believe that these servers will address our high-volume transactions," says Renato B. Almeda, factory director at Yazaki-Torres. "We have never considered other brands. We've been using Fujitsu products way back in 1983."

Yazaki-Torres has been Fujitsu's customer for 16 years, which started in August 1983 when the company first acquired a FACOM V830 minicomputer. In 1985, Fujitsu replaced the "V" minicomputer series by the smaller more powerful and economical "K" mid-range series. Yazaki-Torres had their systems upgraded with the highly efficient K-series computers that same period.

Noel P. Hernandez, EDP manager at Yazaki-Torres, adds that Fujitsu's post-sales services for all its products are readily available within 24 hours, the most important aspect of its business with Fujitsu.

Almeda further points out that: "When we decided to go with Fujitsu in 1983, it was basically due to the type of customer service orientation that Fujitsu offered its customers. In the final stage of negotiation as far as training and purchase of hardware is concerned, we decided to switch to Fujitsu because I was not satisfied with the customer service orientation of other vendors."

Since Yazaki-Torres is a Japanese joint venture company, Almeda and his team was looking for the Japanese customer service orientation that they were expecting from any of their partners. "Our partnership with Fujitsu is basically anchored on providing us with a full service relationship wherein the customer shall be provided with full support and assistance with no amount of hesitancy. That's really our basis as to why we decided to switch to Fujitsu 16 years ago," he claims.

Hernandez says that the company will be developing a full manufacturing system with the Fujitsu GP7000. The manufacturing system is subdivided into four modules. The first module is Production Support, consisting of Engineering, Material Planning, and Production Planning. The second is the Production Module, which is related to the day-to-day operation of its construction line. The third module is the Human Resources, while the fourth module is Services. Almeda adds that this manufacturing system is part of the company's Integrated Management Information System, which will be completed within a period of three to four years. "That's also one of the main reasons why we decided to consider Fujitsu GP7000, along with Fujitsu teamservers , because this hardware can cope up with the requirements of our computerization program by the end of 2003."

"It is not a question of aggressiveness in implementing technology but it's basically how we foresee the need of our organization. Despite the latest trends as far as Information Technology is concerned, if we feel that the latest trends have nothing to do with our needs, then there is no point to buy it or put it in our system. So it will all depend on what is going to be the organization's requirements," he stresses.

Hernandez, for his part, points out some of the challenges he foresees with implementing their systems with Fujitsu GP7000. "We are new with UNIX because this is the first time that we use UNIX likewise the other products of Fujitsu. There is a complete change of technology from our existing K Series and COBOL to UNIX. We believe we can work on this easily but it would take about three to six months of training to fully cope up with this new environment." Likewise, Jimmy Ching, marketing director at Volume Products Division at Fujitsu Philippines, Inc., comments: "The key word to our long relationship with Yazaki-Torres is quality. This means we have maintained and sustained quality of our products and quality of our post-sales support through the years. We have met every challenge and will continue to meet other foreseen changes as part of our commitment to deliver high-quality products and services, aside with maintaining a long, satisfying relationship with our customer."
