Smart implements SIBS project for Analog and GSM with FPI

Smart Communications, Inc.

Smart Communications, Inc. is determined to be a premier telecommunications carrier in the country, offering a broad and integrated range of domestic and international telecommunications services, which are reliable, affordable, and available on demand. That was why the company decided to come up with Smart Integrated Business System (SIBS) to fulfill its entire requirements.

Business vision

In line with Smart's business vision, the scope of the SIBS project was for the provision of a total solution to achieve an integrated business system that would fully meet Smart's present needs and provide flexible enhancements for future growth. Smart identified four major requirements: a comprehensive billing and customer care system; an intercarrier settlement system; service activation system; and a billing mediation system.

In March 1998, Smart chose Fujitsu's system integration proposal that included Inter-Carrier Settlement (using Prospero), Mediation (using ICL Service-Independent Mediation System or SIMSE), and Service Activation (using OSI NetExpert) for its Smart Analog service. The SIBS project went live without a glitch on May 1, 1999. The implementation of the Smart GSM phase 1.0 for SIMS and Prospero started in October 1999 and successfully went live in February 2000.

"Smart has made a strategic investment in its systems architecture to competitively support its retail and wholesale customers," Felipe R. Manalang, EVP and GM of FPI, says. "The implementation of the SIBS project will give Smart accurate, flexible call accounting and access to a high value business revenue breakdown."

Fujitsu Partnership

"Smart has chosen FPI because it is a proven Systems Integrator, offering state-of-the-art solutions and a wide range of support," says Manalang. "FPI has established relationships with foreign expertise. The company also uses sound and well-known implementation methodology."

Smart's partnership with FPI can be considered as one team working harmoniously towards one goal --making Smart as one of the leading mobile phone providers in the Philippines. Smart expects FPI to maintain the current relationship and to be able to support Smart's growing and aggressive requirements."

Smart also expects the system to support the billing and mediation requirements of Smart and the PLDT group of companies. The carrier also looks at supporting the marketing plans of all group of companies with the implementation of the SIBS project for GSM service.

The company's SIBS application is expected to handle the projected increase of subscribers. With the SIBS, the server platforms are expected to expand, the increase in number of GSM switches and the introduction of different mobile services (e.g. WAP applications, GPRS, HCSD, etc.) will be implemented as well.
