Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT)
PLDT upgrades PHIX/IIG with FPI

To meet the challenges of increasing competition and the growing demand for technologically advanced Internet-enabled services, the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) upgrades the Philippine Internet Exchange (PHIX) International Internet Gateway (IIG).
The PHIX/IIG is a PLDT facility that renders local and global transit of Internet Services. PHIX is an interconnection point for a group of local Internet Service Providers (ISP) that allows local exchange of IP traffic. IIG is a premium gateway that provides reliable, high speed, and managed access to global Internet. PLDT sought to upgrade the operation, functionality, and services offered by its PHIX/IIG facility to its customers.
FPI, together with its partners Sun Microsystem, Narus, Inc., Cronus Group and Cisco Systems, has been tasked to implement its proposed solution for the PLDT PHIX/IIG project. The task includes the installation of Internet access-related servers, and all other hardware, software, documentation, technical assistance, training, and web-based interface. FPI anticipates the project to go live in September 2001.
NARUS, the leading provider in business infrastructure systems and software, deploys its platform to monitor and supply comprehensive usage information for the project. PHIX will use the NARUS Internet Business Infrastructure (IBI) platform to give ISPs insights as to how their enterprise and personal customers use their service. This will allow ISPs to optimize the traffic on their network and to offer specific, targeted services to new and existing customers.
"As the country's dominant telecommunications service provider, PLDT is committed to delivering the Internet services infrastructure that best meet the global business needs of our service provider-customers," says Romeo dela Cruz, PLDT's project manager for the PHIX/IIG project.
"The project's services represent a fast-growing market opportunity for service providers, and PLDT is indeed ready," Felipe R. Manalang, FPI President, claims. "With this new-world networking infrastructure in place and a well-deserved reputation for providing high-quality services, PLDT is well-equipped to have a significant advantage over its current rivals and its future competition."
