Globe Telecom, Inc.
High-Speed Network installed at Globe Telecom Plaza

GLOBE Telecom aims to be an organization that anticipates and responds to global market trends in telecommunications, while still remaining focused on customer satisfaction.
It believes that this strategy will allow the company to grow and prosper. To strengthen this strategy and increase its competitive advantage, Globe is empowering its workforce with state-of-the-art IT tools and networking applications.
The number of employees is also increasing - reflecting the growth of Globe's business volumes and market share. Moreover, Globe will be transferring 95% of all its employees (or more than 2,000 users) to a new building - the Globe Telecom Plaza in Mandaluyong City - and this aggregation of users translates to more PC's, servers and applications running on the same network. Specifically, Globe is adding 300 PC's per year to its enterprise network at the Plaza. New applications will be rolled out soon, such as an Integrated Billing System, Imaging Help Desk, HR applications, and videoconferencing. These new investments are important to Globe's goals of using technology, especially a high performance network as a foundation to achieving high growth and return on investment.
Network Upgrade
These new developments were the driving factors for Globe to design and upgrade its existing network. This upgrade is meant to address the anticipated increase in network traffic and the rise of network utilization at Globe Telecom Plaza.
As its business processes become more dependent on its enterprise network, Globe's MIS saw the need to evolve their current network into a scalable, future-proof, fault-tolerant and high-performance Intranet.
They evaluated many options and asked WeSolv Open Computing Inc., the networking subsidiary of FPI, to design, supply and implement a solution based on Cisco's Catalyst 5500 Layer 3 switches and Fast EtherChannel technology. WeSolv's proposed network equipment is highly scalable which means that Globe's new network can handle the anticipated growth rate of 300 PC's per year and the anticipated growth in the number of users as well as the applications to be rolled out soon.
In addition, WeSolv's network is designed to be fault-tolerant which is prepared to tolerate a number of hardware failures and still continue to operate. Ronald Gerardino, Manager of Network Enterprise, Management Information Systems of Globe Telecom, says, "WeSolv possesses the skills necessary to respond promptly to all our inquiries and requests for support. They have a large number of skilled engineers, so the availability of technical support is no problem. We are truly impressed by WeSolv's overall conduct and professionalism."
Gerardino adds that with WeSolv's help, Globe will be able to transform its existing network without disturbing the work and productivity of its existing users. "WeSolv was able to tailor-fit the network elements and technology based on Globe's designed network infrastructure. Globe was able to accomplish its goal of a robust network with the strong support of WeSolv."
He also claims that the network equipment proposed by WeSolv is future-proof because it can easily support ATM, Gigabit Ethernet and Gigabit EtherChannel should Globe require any of these technologies in the future.
Aside from allowing Globe employees to utilize existing applications as well as new bandwidth - intensive ones, the new network will help speed up the exchange of vital information to all levels with in the company.
"Today, high-speed LANs are becoming widely used, largely because they operate at very high speeds and support such high-bandwidth applications as voice and video conferencing," says Peter Tan, EVP and GM at WESOLV. Tan stresses that Globe's new network capability would facilitate resource optimization and aid in the early detection and prompt resolution of network bottlenecks. In addition to Catalyst switches, the SNMP-compliant CiscoWorks would be able to collect and display useful data on other SNMP-compliant devices on Globe's network.
"Networking is indeed the foundation of today's IT industry. WeSolv provides a broad range of value-added, network-based solutions to help our customers - from small to large corporations - achieve their goals," adds Josel Dilig, account manager at WeSolv. "In so doing, we are well-positioned to consolidate our leadership in the field of networking as we enter the new millennium."
