Magneto-Optical Drive FAQs
What does MO stand for?
MO is an acronym for magneto-optical technology. It is a revolutionary approach to data storage that combines the advantages of both magnetic and laser technologies to capture and store data on removable MO disks.
What is the benefit of MO technology?
Data is free from head crash; there is no physical contact between head and disk surface because only the laser beam can alter data. MO technology also protects data from hostile environment conditions such as moisture, dust, shock, vibration and strong magnetic fields without sustaining any data loss.
How fast is MO?
A considerable amount of research and development has led to remarkable technology enhancements. Fujitsu's DynaMO 1300SD drive offers up to 5.9MB/s transfer speed, which means even MPEG movie files can be played easily.
What is backwards compatibility?
Backwards compatibility means that you can always read and write the previous generation of MO disks with the most updated MO drive. For example, if you are using a DynaMO 1300SD drive, you can read and write 1.3GB MO disks plus 640, 540, 230 and 128MB disks. If you are already a MO user, your current or old disk can still be used when you upgrade to the latest MO drive. If you are considering MO as a removable storage option, it offers the widest selection of disk capacities with one MO drive.
Is DynaMO compatible with other manufacturer's MO drives and can I use other branded MO disks with my DynaMO?
Yes, DynaMO is Fujitsu's brand name for an ISO standard. Once other products conform to this standard, you can enjoy the compatibility among different branded MO drives and disks.
What is GIGAMO and is it ISO compatible?
GIGAMO is the new standard for 3.5" MO with over 1GB capacity, jointly developed by Fujitsu and the Sony Corporation. The DynaMO 1300SD drive conforms with this new standard.
Fujitsu offers three products of the same capacity - the 640SE, SD and AI. What is the difference and which one should I choose?
If you need an external drive, the 640SE or 640SD is suitable. The 640SE has an external AC adapter and the 640SD has a built-in power supply. Both are SCSI and can easily be connected to your PC/Mac through either the SCSI board or PC Card SCSI card. If you need a DynaMO drive for a notebook it can be connected through the printer port via a parallel adapter cable. If you need an internal drive, the 640AI ATAPI interface drive is suitable. It conveniently fits into either a 3.5-inch or 5.25-inch PC drive bay.
