Taking care of WA Housing
The association between Fujitsu and Western Australia's Ministry of Housing is a fine example of a long-term relationship in application development and IT support. Beginning with a drive to reduce costs and allow the state housing authority to concentrate on its core business, it has resulted in Fujitsu developing the CareTaker housing systems solution.
The Ministry of Housing has responsibility to help WA residents gain access to affordable housing. It does this by funding home ownership, construction and operation of rental properties, and land development projects.
In 1996, faced with the problem of increasing productivity while cutting costs, the Ministry began to reorganise its operations. It started by redeveloping its legacy IMS and DB2 systems into a totally integrated and comprehensive housing application system.
Before this was completed in early 1999, Fujitsu and the Ministry of Housing began investigating ways to both reduce the total cost of ownership of the application system, and allow the Ministry to concentrate on its core business of providing and managing houses.
In mid-1999, they entered a partnership arrangement for Fujitsu to provide application development and support services for the Ministry's housing application system. Fujitsu took ownership of the application system and developed it into the CareTaker product, which is now available to organisations worldwide.
These developments coincided with the establishment of Fujitsu's Enterprise Solutions office in Perth. This office provides comprehensive expertise not only for CareTaker, but also for general application outsourcing, application development, e-Business, CRM, workflow and technical support.
