Fujitsu announces new enterprise hard disk drives with industry leading technology

Fujitsu Computer Products of America

San Jose, CA, March 08, 2004

Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. (FCPA), one of the world's leading suppliers of hard disk drives and computer peripherals, today introduced the MAT and MAU series enterprise hard disk drive (HDD) offering up to 300GB of storage capacity. Fujitsu's MAT series hard disk drive is the industry's first 75Gb/sq.in. four-platter enterprise design to deliver 300GB of storage capacity in a 10K RPM 3.5in form factor. Accompanying that drive, Fujitsu's MAU series enterprise hard disk drive is the industry's first 15K RPM, 147GB four-platter hard disk drive to enter the market. Compared with previous generation models, storage capacity has been doubled, and internal data transfer rates have been increased by up to 25 per cent.

Fujitsu continues to set the standard for HDD innovation by increasing the capacity and performance of its industry leading enterprise storage solutions. Today's news follows Fujitsu's recent announcement that it delivered the first fully working 3Gb/s Small Form Factor (SFF), Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) drive, further underscoring Fujitsu's leadership in both technology and innovation.

"Fujitsu's new 300GB enterprise hard disk drive is a tremendous technology accomplishment at 75Gb/sq. inch in a four-platter design. This hard disk drive allows our customers to build and deploy storage systems that offer significant enterprise storage capacity with a focus on cost-effective performance," said Joel Hagberg, vice president, marketing, Fujitsu Computer Products of America. "This is an exciting time for Fujitsu as we increase capacity and performance, lead the transition to small form factors, and continue to deliver industry-leading quality."

The new MAT Series hard disk drives, with 10K RPM spindle speed, feature capacities of 73, 147 and 300GB. The MAU Series, with 15K RPM spindle speed, offers three capacity points, which include 36, 73 and 147GB models. Both series include 8MB data buffer for optimising the overall drive performance. Furthermore, Fujitsu's Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) technology embedded on all models assures remarkably quiet operation.

Fujitsu has substantially increased the maximum internal data transfer rate on both the MAU and MAT series to 132MB/s and 147MB/s respectively, reflecting a 25 per cent improvement over previous generation drives. Additionally, both enterprise hard disk drive series are equipped with 68Pin or 80Pin U320 interfaces and 2Gbps Fibre Channel.

Fujitsu's MAT and MAU hard disk product variations and accelerated performance allow greater flexibility for system designers making rack optimised or tower servers, disk systems, and RAID. Additionally, Fujitsu's interface variations also make the enterprise hard disk drives an ideal choice for configuring DAS, NAS, or SAN storage environment.

Availability

In Australia and New Zealand, MAT Series qualification units will be available for OEM customers from October 2004, followed by MAU Series from December. Volume shipment will follow soon after.
