Targets & Progress

As part of our Fujitsu Australia and New Zealand Sustainability Programme we have set ourselves specific, ambitious and far reaching targets in order to promote continuous environment improvement across our operations.


In 2008, long before most of our competitors, Fujitsu Australia and New Zealand undertook a comprehensive study and review of what our sustainability targets and policies should be. These were developed in consultation with key stakeholders, best practice, science and policy and are evidence of our determination to become a truly sustainable company and a leader in the local marketplace. We are proud to share our targets with you and how we’ve measured up to them as we forge ahead with our sustainability journey.


Our sustainability targets are determined using 2008 as a historical baseline and are based on a number of criteria including:


  • Areas of operations that have the most significant environmental impact
  • Fujitsu Group’s broader environmental policy and targets
  • Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) that encourages companies to support emissions reduction targets in line with those outlined by national government 
  • Customer and community expectations

Note: Fujitsu acquisitions have been factored into the baseline in accordance with the advice from the Green House Gas Protocol for Corporate Accounting.

What We Measure

Office Electricity Office Electricity targets measure our office electricity consumption which is expressed in terms of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e).

Our strong office efficiency and sustainability performance is demonstrated by our state of the art Victorian head office in Docklands, which has been accredited with a Green Star Six Star Gauge - the best energy rating possible, and our head office at Macquarie Park in Sydney which is 5 star NABERS.

  • Upgrade lighting to LED fittings and zoned lighting
  • SOE management to enforce hibernation mode on devices

  • Rationalisation of printer fleet with FollowMe printing installed or being rolled out in offices

  • Implemented end user device power settings to improve ICT energy efficiency
  • Pilot end user power management software
  • Background management of ICT devices using Cisco Energy Manager, which should reduce device energy use by 20%
  • Improvements to the communications room layout at Macquarie Park
  • Spot improvements such as install/configure timers on hot water services
  • Investigate lighting upgrades in warehouses and facilities where we have longer term leases
  • Continue to move to activity-based working as the new standard
  • Continue to drive technology advancements to low energy office solutions that include pilots of virtual desktop environments and power management software
  • Continue reducing desktop usage and migrate to laptops
  • Continue energy monitoring and working with external partners to identify further energy efficiency opportunities
  • Continue to investigate government rebates and incentives, working with finance, facilities and procurement where appropriate
  • Build the business case for implementation of end user power management software across all sites

What We Measure

TravelOur travel target refers to the level of emissions associated with business travel undertaken by Fujitsu employees and Fujitsu related operational activities. We are determined to drive down CO2e deriving from our business travel and as a means to do this we have heavily invested in telecommuting, green vehicles as well as policies, processes and staff subsidies for public transport.

  • Rollout of Lync conferencing across Australia and New Zealand

  • Look to expand pilot of Hybrid / low emission vehicles

What We Measure

Data CentreData centres represent 97% of our carbon emissions and tackling this is therefore of material importance to our business. As such, Fujitsu makes significant investments in state of the art data centre facilities that are industry leading in efficiency performance.


Data Centre Efficiency – NABERS Energy for Data Centres

Fujitsu is proud to lead the way in industry collaboration and public commitment to NABERS Energy for Data Centres an Australian government initiative. In a world-first, the NABERS Data Centre Accredited Assessment provides a way for data centre energy efficiency to be externally validated against a standard by an independent government assessor.

Fujitsu claimed the accolade of being the first facility in Australia and the first full DC portfolio to be certified with a national average of 3.75 in 2016. The portfolio rating signals a new industry benchmark in energy conservation, with Fujitsu’s centres achieving an efficiency of 27% higher than market average. This equates to an estimated 27 GigaWatt hours of electricity savings per year, which equates to over 24,000,000 kilograms of carbon emissions.

Power Usage Effectiveness (national average)

Data Centre efficiency is measured by percentage change to baseline PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) - an energy efficiency metric derived from the Green Grid . PUE is a globally accepted metric used in measuring the efficiency of a Data Centre; it is a comparison of the total amount of power that a Data Centre uses, versus how much of that power is used for IT purposes.

The lower the PUE ratio, the greater the level of efficiency. A ratio of 1:0 is the best (theoretical) score achievable. Spikes in PUE will typically reflect new facilities coming online and building to efficiency capacity.

  • Increase the use of free cooling where possible 
  • Customer engagement program on energy efficiency 
  • Expand the use of modular cold aisle containment where appropriate 
  • Continue NABERS energy efficiency rating across the whole data centre portfolio and implement 0.5 star improvement plans for each location
  • Provide complimentary blanking panels to selected customers to help improve airflows around individual racks
  • Monitor individual targets and develop site specific business cases as and when appropriate 
  • Continue customer engagement plan for all tenants and provide advisory services on data centre energy efficiency 
  • Investigate and build the business case for using renewable energy

What We Measure

RenewablesAll sites under Fujitsu control in NZ purchase 100% renewable energy. In Australia, renewable energy continues to be reviewed and assessed.


Actions so far What’s on the agenda
  • In New Zealand, all sites under Fujitsu control have moved to Meridian Energy which uses 100% renewable energy (Hydro)
  • Continue to review solar business case should circumstances change
  • Investigate power purchase agreements (PPA) for renewable energy
  • Engage customers to support renewable energy business case

For the period 2008 to 2012, achievement against our initial interim sustainability targets were as follows:

Over this period three of Fujitsu’s four primary environmental targets were met, helping us to significantly reduce the environmental impact of our operations.

In terms of our office and business travel emission reduction targets we not only met but well exceeded these.

However, in the area of renewable energy there is still progress to be made and we did not meet the most recent target set for ourselves. We are now striving to increase the amount of renewable energy Fujitsu generates over the next five years as part of our ongoing Sustainability Programme.
