Fujitsu Extends Zero Client Infrastructure with Portable Zero Client

Pocket-sized portable virtual desktop means secure remote access anywhere

Munich, October 5, 2010 – Fujitsu today extends its popular Zero Client concept with the introduction of the Portable Zero Client, enabling Zero Client users to access their virtual desktop from anywhere from any computer with a network connection. Developed to meet the needs of an increasingly mobile workforce, the Portable Zero Client MZ900 plug-and-play device provides unparalleled security, flexibility and convenience in comparison to alternative remote access methods.

As the global trend accelerates towards people working from any location, on any device, so enterprises are faced with the new challenge of ensuring secure remote access to corporate desktops. Fujitsu has developed the Portable Zero Client to address exactly this issue – dubbed “tech populism” by independent research firm Forrester – by providing a truly portable device supporting all conventional secure end-to-end connections, to ensure that sensitive data never goes unprotected.

The Portable Zero Client MZ900 device is based on a USB memory stick. Software on a read-only partition of the unit provides an installation-free access mechanism that creates a secure access so that the user can log-on to their own Zero Client desktop image from anywhere in the world. Only when connected and authenticated can sensitive data on an encrypted part of the device be accessed. Once unplugged, the Portable Zero Client leaves behind no tell-tale traces on the host machine.

This approach provides all the benefits of desktop virtualization, saving companies time and resources while their employees benefit from increased flexibility and productivity, without the need to carry around a notebook. The Portable Zero Client also helps organizations to migrate to Zero Client Infrastructures with existing hardware and protect existing IT investments.

Fujitsu is also addressing one of the major risks to a mobile workforce: of secure access being compromised by a host machine, through a virus or Trojan. Corporate networks are protected from threats since host computers are unable to edit the Portable Zero Client’s connection and authentication software. Because the Portable Zero Client carries secure access software to complete the login process on a protected partition, it also offers protection against malware on host machines that might log connections and keystrokes.

Rajat Kakar, Vice President Workplace Systems at Fujitsu Technology Solutions says: “As today’s workforce becomes increasingly mobile, so this is presenting more of a dilemma to companies and forcing them to make the difficult choice between restricting access and reducing productivity. We have developed the Fujitsu Portable Zero Client to provide the best of both worlds – a secure extension to the Zero Client Infrastructure that reaches far beyond their doors. Now, mobile workers truly can carry their own personal desktop in their pocket, wherever they go – and enjoy the peace of mind that their data is protected, no matter where they connect to the network.”

The Portable Zero Client MZ900 model will be available from late November 2010, across Europe.
