Due to their nature as devices that store and preserve large amounts of data, disk storage systems have many disk drives. To reduce access times and for better performance, it has been considered necessary for all disk drives to remain spinning even when no read or write orders are being processed. Even backup disks are no exception, due to residual fears of system or access failure.
With concern for the environment, Fujitsu has focused on changing this generally accepted notion and has identified that backup disks can be stopped for significant periods of time without system problems or risk to the business processes. Backup disks have limited access profiles, so they don't need to keep spinning at other times. This ability to spin down and manage low accessed drives has been translated into the Eco-mode function on ETERNUS disk storage systems(*Note 1). By using the Eco-mode function it has been shown that power consumption can be reduced by 15% (*Note 2). This provides both cost savings and more environmentally friendly operation.
*Note 1: Available with ETERNUS8000, ETERNUS4000 and ETERNUS2000.
*Note 2: Comparison of ETERNUS2000 with 20 x 300GB disk drives and 24 x 750GB disk drives operating without stopping and when the 750GB disk drives are stopped for 19 hours a day.
