Fujitsu Europe Limited
Fujitsu to Launch World’s First 2.5” 320GB(*1) Hard Drive with AES(*2) 256-bit Encryption
Delivers world’s fastest encryption performance, lowers cost of PC ownership and provides advanced secure erase feature
London, 21 April 2008 — Fujitsu Europe Limited today announced the release of its new MHZ2-CJ series of 2.5-inch 320GB (*1) hard disk drives with automatic hardware-based encryption to effectively secure data against theft or loss. Offering a 3.0 Gb/s Serial ATA (SATA) interface (*3) for fast data transfer and 7,200 RPM, the industry’s highest rotational speed in this performance class, the new series for computer and external storage devices will be available at the end of May 2008.
256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) (*2)
The MHZ2-CJ series is the first hard disk drive in the world to support the 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) (*2).
The drive implements the AES (*2) hardware encryption directly into the processor chip of the hard disk drive, resulting in
more robust security and faster system performance than software-based encryption. All data stored on the hard disk drive
can be erased instantly, in less than a second, using the advanced secure erase feature. For public institutions and companies
handling large volumes of personal and other confidential data, this dramatically lowers the time and cost involved in wiping
clean the hard drives of computers that are disposed of or reused. The built-in AES (*2) automatically encrypts all data when
storing it on the hard disk drive and decrypts the data when read. Unlike software-based encryption, the key does not reside
in the computer’s memory. This makes it more resistant to attack and imposes no processing overhead on the CPU, optimizing
system performance.
High Security
With the growing problem of information theft and new laws protecting personal information, interest in data security is extremely
high, especially as disk capacity increases and users write vast amounts of personal and other data on their drives. Lost
or stolen computers with high-capacity hard drives put confidential information at risk, making the need to secure the data
stored on those hard drives all the more urgent. The conventional response to this problem has been the use off BIOS passwords
(*4) and software-based encryption. Seeking a more robust form of data security, Fujitsu has now developed 2.5" hard disk
drives with hardware-based AES (*2) encryption using an industry-leading 256-bit key.
Dramatic Cost Reduction
With growing awareness of the problem of data stored on the hard drives of computers, anyone planning to discard or reuse
a computer has been obliged to use specialized software to overwrite all the user accessible data blocks on the hard drive
multiple times, a costly and time-consuming proposition. This new series of drives includes an advanced secure erase feature
to dramatically reduce the total cost of ownership to public institutions as well as private enterprises. Fujitsu’s line of
highly reliable and efficient hard disk drives now includes a hard disk drive that combines maximum data security features
with high performance, resulting in an ideal computing environment.
Leading specifications
Fujitsu offers the new MHZ2-CJ hard disk drive series with storage capacities of 80GB (*1), 120GB (*1), 160GB (*1), 250GB
(*1) and 320GB (*1), a rotational speed of 7,200 RPM; SATA 3.0 Gb/s interface; a 16MB (*5) size buffer, an idle power consumption
of 0.80W (typ.), standby power consumption with an average of 0.13W, with an average read/write seek time of 10.5ms/12.5ms;
and a maximum data transfer rate of 300MB/s. The MHZ2-CJ series´ average acoustic noise level is 2.5 bels (*6) in idle mode
whilst offering a shock resistance during operation of 325G (2ms). The drive´s dimensions are 9.5 x 70 x 100mm (*7) with a
weight of 115g.

(*1) One gigabyte (GB) is equivalent to one billion bytes. Usable storage capacity is actually less than this figure. Actual storage capacity may vary depending on the environment and formatting of the customer's system.(*2) Advanced Encryption Standard (AES): Selected by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology, this is the standard form of encryption used by the U.S. government. AES defines three possible key lengths: 128, 192, and 256 bits. The longer the key, the stronger the encryption.(*3) 3.0 Gb/s Serial ATA interface: The Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) interface is one of the ATA standards for connecting a computer to a hard disk drive or other storage device. Each device has a 1:1 signal path to the host, transmitting data serially (one bit at a time). Therefore, high-speed data transfer without interference or noise is possible. SATA3.0Gb/s is an extension of the SATA1.5Gb/s standard and 3.0Gb/s is equivalent to transfer speed of 300MB per second.(*4) BIOS password: A password mechanism that is installed in the BIOS used to boot the PC.(*5) Buffer: Small portion of buffer memory is used for drive firmware control.(*6) bel: A unit for indicating noise levels. 1 bel is equivalent to 10 decibels.(*7) Dimension: Excludes PCBA and connector.
