Fujitsu Invests in Extension of VME Mainframe Platform with Acquisition of Gresham’s VME Software Business

Fujitsu EMEIA

Munich, March 05, 2019 – Fujitsu today announces a milestone in the continuing development of its Virtual Machine Environment (VME)1 mainframe business, with an agreement to acquire Gresham Technologies plc’s VME software business.
The acquisition ensures Fujitsu’s VME customers can extend and expand their use of the massively scalable, consistently reliable mainframe platform. VME supports many mission-critical business applications and remains a hugely important workhorse for organizations internationally2. Customers continue to trust and rely on VME to run many core applications that are critical to their digital business – for example, banking, human resources and payroll.
Moving these assets into the Fujitsu VME Portfolio provides a strategic roadmap for Gresham VME customers to migrate to Fujitsu’s next generation VME Platform as a Service (VPaaS) – based on the Modern VME Environment (MVE) – with the assurance of excellent continuity of operational software support and maintenance for mainframe customers.
The agreement between Fujitsu and Gresham follows a joint technical feasibility study. This established the compatibility of Gresham’s VME products with Fujitsu’s successor VME platform – the Modern VME Environment (MVE), and quantified the product upgrade requirements, plus the associated benefits and risks.
Notes to editors
1The Virtual Machine Environment (VME) operating system was developed in the mid-1970's by UK-based ICL, which was wholly acquired by Fujitsu in 1998. VME is one of Fujitsu’s flagship mainframe operating systems and remains one of the newest, best-in-class operating systems. Gresham developed a portfolio of complementary software development tools for the VME operating system. The products included in the acquisition are AltaData, DataServe Client for Unix, DataServe Client for VMS, DataServe Client for Windows, DataServe for VME (client & server), DataServe Server for Unix, DataServe Server for VMS, DB/FastDump, DB/FastIC, DDS Server, JJMAN (including JJMAN Archive), TPMS Gateway, TPS, TPS Server, VME Bridge (aka OSI Gateway).
2Among VME installations is the UK Government’s revenues and benefits systems, supporting more than 150,000 staff online and handling more than a billion transactions each year.
