Fujitsu Extends Availability and High-End Performance with Third-generation SQ Series Mainframes

Munich, March 05, 2012

News facts:

Fujitsu today announces the third-generation of its SQ mainframe server line, incorporating the latest Intel Xeon E7 series x86 processors. Combining mainframe uptime and performance with mainstream server technology economics, the Fujitsu SQ210 Business Server is capable of simultaneously running triple operating systems.

Business benefit

Underlining the ease-of-integration for mainframe technology into server environments, the SQ210 Business Server is ideal for system consolidation, since it can combine the mainframe promise of maximum availability and reliability on Fujitsu’s trusted BS2000/OSD operating system with the convenience and lowered cost of running applications on Windows and Linux server platforms.

With the third-generation model gaining the additional of the new Intel Xeon E7 series of x86 processors, Fujitsu’s SQ210 Business Server provides a very high degree of application availability, making it the perfect platform for efficient and cost-effective hosting of all business-critical applications on a single system.

Improved high availability

The new model SQ210 Business Server introduces improved High Availability (HA) to significantly reduce unplanned downtime, while Live Migration ensures maximum system availability and convenience in case of planned maintenance, since workloads are reallocated dynamically to alternative SQ Business Servers – all without any downtime.

Increased system processing power allows for superior performance when running both Oracle and SESAM databases, while the SQ210 server firmware makes use of the integrated Just in Time (JIT) interpreter to provide accelerated processing for runtime-intensive applications. Particularly easy to integrate into existing Storage Area Networks, the SQ210 includes a SAN-Integration-Package (SIP), while support for Fibre Channel (FC) provides a direct high-speed connection for mid-range ETERNUS DX400 S2 and high-end ETERNUS DX8700 S2 storage systems.

The Fujitsu SQ210 range is comprised of 16 models, from single-processor BS2000/OSD systems through to the new top-of-the-range 16-way model. Fujitsu offers pre-configuration at the factory in Augsburg, Germany, and as an option, also provides lifetime system monitoring and maintenance, ensuring that systems continue to run at peak performance.

Customers can select from a range of system performance levels to meet their needs – starting with 12 RPF (Relative Performance Factor)1. At the high end, the Fujitsu SQ210 boasts up to 1,750 RPF.

Rolf Strotmann, Vice-President Enterprise Server and Software at Fujitsu Technology Solutions

"Mainframes are still unrivalled when it comes to availability, reliability and ease of use, and this is why they are cornerstone of datacenter strategy for both enterprises and public sector organizations that need high levels of system uptime and reliability. With the new SQ210 Business Server, Fujitsu combines the stability of mainframe platform with the convenience of Windows and Linux operating systems – all on the same box.”

1 RPF (Relative Performance Factor) is equivalent to approximately 1.5 Mips (million instructions per second)

Available to order with immediate effect, the Fujitsu SQ210 Business Server will ship from June 2012. Pricing depends on configuration.
