The Elektra European Electronics Awards 2017 has selected Fujitsu Components Europe as a finalist in two categories – Renewable Energy Design of the Year and Design Team of the Year.

“We are honoured to have been shortlisted,” said Hans Grobben, Vice President of Marketing & Sales at Fujitsu Components Europe. “In particular, because both nominations reflect our design effort to assist customers with finding innovative solutions tailored to their needs. Although we are a components supplier, we differentiate ourselves by providing skills and experience to customers to help them find the best solution, either from our wide range of proven quality products or by developing the best-fit solution to the specific customers’ requirements.”

For the Renewable Energy category, Fujitsu entered its new range of high performance DC relays that have been specially created to meet the growing need for high voltage, high current DC relays, which is driven by the growth in photovoltaic panels and electric/hybrid cars. This new generation of DC relays required several design innovations. At the new operational conditions of up to 250A and 450VDC, arcing is a major problem. The design team solved this arcing issue by using strong magnets that are mounted close to the contact. The magnetic field of the magnets and the magnetic field generated by the current in the arc, exercise a repelling force that will instantly draw the arc out of the contact gap. The forced increase of the length of the arc will cause the arc to extinguish and break the current.

The entry for Design Team of the Year, is Fujitsu’s new MultiLightTouch™ touch panel range that enhances resistive touch panel technology to give it the advantages of capacitive technology but without the drawbacks of either. MultiLightTouch has the ability to do multi-touch for gesture recognition and has the look, finish and light touch feeling of capacitive screens. This is achieved with a family of new controller chips that use proprietary algorithms to enable them to work out dual-touch gestures. Advanced manufacturing techniques means that the force needed to make a connection is reduced from 0.05 to 0.02N or less, i.e. very similar to capacitive.
