Fujitsu Services, one of Europe’s leading IT services companies, today announced a contract with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) to consolidate the provision of its ICT Managed Services. The initial £34m contract, worth a potential £100 million over a period of eight years, will help the PSNI consolidate its existing, multiple IT service providers into one single provider. This contract will have a direct impact on front line officers providing them with higher quality support for ICT services.
In particular, officers and staff will benefit from a 24/7 on site support desk, which will dramatically improve the speed with which IT queries are handled. Fujitsu will also manage maintenance and servicing of between 8,000 and 10,000 PCs and laptops, which are crucial to police officers and staff performing their daily duties.
The decision to consolidate the managed service provision via the Fujitsu contract will provide benefits for the police service including improved service quality and a reduction in costs. Currently the PSNI has over five IT suppliers providing its IT systems. At its peak this contract will be managed by a team of around 100 people.
Fujitsu Services will be responsible for the provision and management of the PSNI’s service desk, fixed line telephony network, data networks (covering WAN and LAN), desktop and laptop computer requirements, applications hosting services, a network of static and mobile automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras and applications support services.
John Tully, head of information and communications services (ICS) at the PSNI comments, “Modern day policing is heavily dependent upon Information and Communication Technology and therefore the reliability and availability of service to the PSNI is paramount. Policing is also a highly reactive service, therefore the delivery of ICT services needs to be able to match the organisation’s ability to respond urgently. The PSNI’s ICT systems and services are critical to policing in Northern Ireland and we expect this new contract with Fujitsu to deliver real, tangible benefits to front line police officers.”
Tully continues, “The agreement with Fujitsu will also allow existing ICT staff within the PSNI to work on other more strategic projects. We can reduce the complexity of service management for our staff by consolidating to a single supplier. There will be a better structure around reporting of issues and it will be much easier to manage and report on ICT performance.”
Eithne Wallis CB, managing director, Government Business, Fujitsu Services, concludes, “Fujitsu was one of four service providers short listed for the project; we were selected on our ability to work in partnership with the PSNI, provide cost effectiveness, supply a solid approach to contract management and deliver stringent service level requirements. It was also crucial that we could prove we have a successful track record of managing the transition from multiple contracts to new single IT managed service. Fujitsu has already successfully commenced projects with the Northern Ireland Civil Service and the Northern Ireland Office Causeway Programme which links six criminal justice organisations. This latest announcement consolidates Fujitsu’s position as the number one IT service provider in Northern Ireland.”
