Fujitsu Announces a New High-Performance, 8-bit Microcontrollers to Serve Expanding Consumer Electronics Market
India, 17 October, 2005 — Fujitsu Microelectronics Asia Pte Ltd (FMAL) today announced the new 8-bit microcontrollers (MCUs) series developed for consumer electronics and home appliances. The new series of high-performance 8-bit MCUs are the latest additions to the Fujitsu F²MC-8FX family, expanding its range to meet the diverse requirements of the consumer electronics market.
“Many home appliances and automotive products, today, are evolving from analog to digital control, and 8-bit MCU remains the most cost-effective solution. To meet these emerging market opportunities, Fujitsu has developed an impressive product portfolio which key concepts are high performance, low power, as low-cost powerful tools with versatile peripherals.” said Andy Chang, Deputy Marketing General Manager, Fujitsu Microelectronics (Shanghai) Co., Ltd.
These new series are designed for use with 5V single power supplies, as well as 3V supplies. It offers functionality at a wide range of voltages in order to accommodate a wide range of power-supply designs.
The new 8FX series use only one-fifth the power, yet have five times the processing capacity of earlier Fujitsu products. It incorporates flash memory, analog-to-digital converter, interrupts, 16-bit timers and pulse width modulation output, along with support for UART, LIN and I2C interfaces. The different features are designed to suit the various application needs. For example, pulse width modulation output is most suitable to drive a compressor motor, which powers refrigerator, washing machine and air-conditioner.
The new device has flash memory integrated into its development and design, to provide program designers the flexibility to change code as many times as they may require. Upon design completion, the flash version can be used for production with the advantage of low cost in high volumes.
In addition, Fujitsu provides a powerful proprietary software called Softune IDE which can debug, simulate, emulate and edit the program code. Softune is an ‘All-in-one-Suit’ which supports both ANSI C and Assembly Language. When both languages are used on a same file, Softune will compile them seamlessly.
To support the development environment of the MCUs, Fujitsu is providing an evaluation board and developer's kit that works with the entire F²MC-8FX family, providing a single environment for development and evaluation. The kit consists of the MB2146-301, an evaluation board for 3V development, the MB2146-303, and a board for a 5V combination with the MB2146-09, which serves as the interface adapter from the PC USB port.
