MTNL awards Y2 & Y3 Orders for CDMA to Fujitsu


Mumbai, December 13, 2002 — In its endeavor to provide affordable mobile service in the areas of its operation, MTNL has planned to install 150K Lines of CDMA Network in Mumbai in three phases of 50K Lines each. The contract for the first phase was executed and put to commercial use on 26 January 2002.

MTNL has now placed its firm Purchase Order for expansion of the existing CDMA WLL Network on Fujitsu. The expansion order would enhance the network capacity from existing 50,000 lines to 142,230 lines. The order has been placed on turnkey basis.

Scope of Order: The Scope of Order includes Survey, Design, Supply of Equipment, Installation, Testing, Commissioning, Making Over the system to MTNL. The expanded network, based on CDMA IS 95-A technology, is to be made over by August 2003.

The Network: The existing network of 50 K Lines had been commissioned by Fujitsu at Mumbai by deploying 32 BTS and 4 BSCs.

The then Minister of Communications, Mr. Pramod Mahajan had inaugurated the services for Mumbai on 31st December 2001 and the network is in Commercial operation since 26th January 2002. As of today, MTNL serves more than 42,532 subscribers.

The expansion order requires expansion of available capacity at Mumbai and providing services at Navi-Mumbai.
