Fujitsu UK & Ireland
London, 3rd March 2010 — Fujitsu has been presented with the ‘Carbon Trust Standard’ for reducing its carbon footprint by 1.7%*. The award – which recognises commitment to measuring and reducing carbon emissions – was given to the UK and Ireland services division of Fujitsu known formally as “Fujitsu Services Holdings Plc” following an extensive evaluation period. This part of Fujitsu was able to show that it had a robust and transparent procedure for measuring emissions and had made clear progress in reducing its carbon footprint.
The Carbon Trust Standard is the world’s first carbon award that requires an organisation to measure, manage and reduce its carbon footprint and actually make real reductions year-on-year. Unlike other award schemes, organisations are rewarded for actions they’ve taken to cut carbon across their own operations.
Juliet Silvester, head of corporate responsibility, Fujitsu UK and Ireland, “Achieving the Carbon Trust Standard for our UK and Ireland services division is another demonstrable example of how Fujitsu continues to be an environmentally responsible company. The Carbon Trust Standard is of particular value to Fujitsu because it has a different focus to many other environmental and carbon schemes - it only rewards organisations that achieve emissions reductions through their own actions.”
Silvester continues, “Many organisations purchase carbon “offsets” to compensate for the emissions they generate. Some organisations aim to achieve “neutrality” by purchasing offsets equivalent to their total emissions. The Carbon Trust Standard does not give credit for offsets – as the Standard requires organisations to take responsibility for reducing their own emissions directly.
Fujitsu’s carbon accounting procedures were examined by an independent assessor who also looked at the company’s carbon and energy management and reduction programmes. All data was independently verified and a selection of site surveys were undertaken to confirm the accuracy of the commitment and practices Fujitsu had provided on paper to the assessor.
Harry Morrison, general manager of the Carbon Trust Standard, “Being certified with the Carbon Trust Standard is proof an organisation has taken genuine action to reduce their direct impact on climate change by cutting carbon emissions. We congratulate the UK and Ireland services division of Fujitsu on this achievement. Both businesses and consumers share a desire for one, credible way to prove an organisation has not only measured, but actually reduced their carbon emissions year-on-year without the use of offsetting. The Carbon Trust Standard provides this credibility and we encourage more organisations to follow Fujitsu in making this commitment."
The Carbon Trust Standard was launched in June 2008 with the support of Environment Secretary Hilary Benn.
