Creating Value, Cutting Cost: Turning Lean theory into practice
19th March 2009, No Six Kildare Street
The Fujitsu Executive Event (EDE) programme is designed to provide an enjoyable and informative networking experience for director level peers from a cross section of industries. Hosted by Regina Moran, Chief Executive Officer with Fujitsu, the sessions focus on boardroom issues such as improving customer experience, sustainability and corporate responsibility, back office efficiency, organizational agility and managing complexity.
The second in a series of these events took place in Number Six Kildare Street on 19th March 2009. You cannot ‘Cut’ your way to success, value must be created as part of the response to the recession and we must define a new way to lead our businesses, was the key message from Regina Moran, CEO of Fujitsu to the gathering of Irish business and public sector leaders
The highlight of the event, was an interview by Dr Bowman with the renowned author of The Toyota Way, Professor Jeffrey Liker from the University of Michigan. This book first brought Lean principals to the attention of general business audiences, explaining the management principals and business philosophy behind Toyota’s global reputation for quality and reliability. Professor Liker discussed how Toyota’s innovative manufacturing process methodology, which is the basis for Lean, ensured that there was constant improvement in process and quality. His message was that Lean methodologies can be effectively brought into the services industry and he believes that this approach could hold the key to survival for many businesses during the recession, a though that was reflected in Moran’s call to action..

Hosted by Regina Moran, Chief Executive Officer with Fujitsu, the sessions focus on boardroom issues such as improving customer experience, sustainability and corporate responsibility, back office efficiency, organizational agility and managing complexity.
At our first event we spoke in depth about the fact that as a nation traditionally we tend to look West as we have strong ties with America. However it was also noted that the lay of the land is changing and increasingly the East is becoming a powerhouse of economic activity. We discussed some of the factors fueling this economic activity. We looked at Japan, Singapore, China, India where more than half of the world’s population live. We examined how Ireland fits into this emerging picture and how we can learn from the fusion of Western and Eastern values.

21st May 2008, Four Seasons Hotel, Dublin
The Institute of Management Consultants and Advisers (IMCA) yesterday presented Eddie O’Connor with its Annual Medal for Business Excellence at a breakfast award ceremony attended by 150 people at the Four Seasons Hotel in Dublin. The Award recognises his establishment of Airtricity and developing it into a major international business, thus recognising at an early stage the potential of wind as an energy source.
Speaking at the award ceremony Eddie said that innovation was a key theme throughout his managerial career from the implementation of new work systems at Bord Na Mona to the establishment of Airtricity from a greenfield start to become a leading player in the international energy business. He said that, while business heads such as himself tend to receive the awards, the successes achieved could not occur without a highly motivated team and effective performance management processes.
Willie Maxwell, President of the IMCA said: “We are delighted to present this award to Eddie and in looking for examples of outstanding private sector achievement he was at the top of most people’s list. The Institute has expanded significantly with twelve of the leading practices in the country now members and it hosted the international consultancy conference last September”.
