Customer’s Challenge

The Marine Institute is the Irish government agency responsible for marine research and development. This agency works in partnership with national and international organisations to help enhance and sustain the marine sector in Ireland.

As part of a comprehensive e-services initiative, the Marine Institute required the development of a new corporate website to act as a portal for access to a suite of Marine Data Services. These services were to be offered to various audiences including commercial enterprises, academic practitioners, research partners, public service bodies and the general public.

The site had to incorporate content management facilities to allow subject matter experts in the Institute to contribute web content items in a streamlined and secure fashion.

Fujitsu Solution

Fujitsu designed the appropriate systems architecture and then developed and deployed the web applications using Microsoft Content Management Server (MSCMS) as the content management solution.

Benefits to our Customer

The key benefits to The Marine Institute gained from the Fujitsu approach to the MSCMS implementation:

  • The new web portal will serve as the central access point for several new Marine Data Service applications such as the Survey Data Management System (SDMS – also developed by Fujitsu) and the Harmful Algal Blooms System (HABS). This will allow for better and more accurate reporting and a central repository for critical information which is easily accessible.
  • The new content management system allows business users within the Institute to directly contribute content through a controlled workflow process. This will improve the quality of the data and encourage business users to contribute.
  • The solution, based on MS CMS and MS SQL Server 2000, is an ideal fit with the Institute’s existing technology platforms. This allowed for a cost effective implementation plan and minimised the disruption to Marine Institute staff during implementation.

Our Approach

Fujitsu designed and developed all templates and scripts required to deliver site functionality within Microsoft Content Management Server (MCMS) 2002 and developed a workflow model to enable the authoring, editing and approval of web content for both Internet and Extranet.

Features of the solutions include:

  • Implemented structure, look-and-feel via MCMS 2002;
  • Developed entirely new secure portal solution;
  • Integrated some 3rd party .NET modules for advanced functions, e.g. advanced search, forums etc…
  • Integrated new templates to CMS solution;
  • Streamlined design phase allowed build to begin as early as possible in order to meet delivery dates.
