Cathay Pacific Drives New Levels of Operational Excellence in Crew Management with Fujitsu's New Crew Control System

The New IT System will enhance Cathay Pacific crew management decision support capability, improving speed and accuracy of the company’s crew tracking

Hong Kong, June 13, 2005 — Fujitsu Hong Kong Limited, a leading provider of customer-focused information technology and telecommunications (IT&T) solutions and services, today announced that the company, together with technology partners Avient Solutions Limited and Armitage Technologies Limited, have been awarded a contract to supply the new Crew Control System (CCS) for Cathay Pacific Airways, which has been named the Airline of The Year, Best Airline Asia and Best First Class in Skytrax 2005 World Airline Awards, the largest global passenger poll.

CCS allows Cathay Pacific to effectively plan and manage all aspects of their day-to-day flight crew operations - from managing the work and training assignments of the crew on the day of operation, to flight pay and allowances calculation.

A key function of CCS is to ensure that all legal, company and industrial rules that govern flight crew activities are strictly followed and inadvertent contravention avoided. CCS, with its decision-making support tools, helps in early identification of potential flight delays or disruptions due to unexpected changes in crew availability. These decision support tools delivered through alerts, scenario modeling and sophisticated graphical displays help devise complex solutions under tight time constraints, enabling better crew handling and problem solution.

The implementation of the new CCS is driven by Fujitsu Hong Kong, who will undertake the role of System Integrator and main project consultancy and management responsibilities. Avient Solutions are to provide the Crew Tracking System software and Armitage will support the Fujitsu Transportation team in the customization and deployment of the system into Cathay Pacific's current IT infrastructure.

"Crew management is a key factor in operational excellence for an airline. Cathay Pacific itself has more than 8,000 flight crewmembers. Many issues that can affect efficient crew management are at play at any one time. Efficient crew management helps enhance operating cost effectiveness," said Chris Hoyland, Manager Integrated Crew Management, Cathay Pacific Airways.

"CCS is mission-critical in our organization, enabling us to better plan and execute daily crew operations. This UNIX-based solution replaces our current mainframe system with a sophisticated, software application that assists our flight operations staff to make better-informed decisions faster. The UNIX platform provides a reliable and secure infrastructure to open up better opportunity for future hardware or software enhancements," he added.

Ron Gould, General Manager, Transportation Systems, Fujitsu Hong Kong, said, "Our success at winning the CCS contract in Cathay Pacific is just one example of Fujitsu Hong Kong's vast capability in consulting and managing IT implementations in complex business environments. Our deep understanding of airline systems, in particular Cathay Pacific's current crew rostering systems, was a big confidence boost to them. We were also able to provide one of the most cost-effective solutions available in the market. We look forward to expanding our relationship with Cathay Pacific into other areas of their operations."

Cathay Pacific took a year to evaluate the alternative systems offered by various vendors before deciding on the solution offered by Fujitsu Hong Kong. The CCS system will be implemented in phases and Cathay Pacific expects the CCS system to go into operation in mid 2006. The overall contract will be for five years, including maintenance and support.
