Fujitsu Empowers the SPARC64 Processor with Innovative Technology Delivering The World's First Use of 90nm Technology in UNIX Servers

The Latest SPARC64 V Processor Offers the World's Highest Performance in Java Applications

Hong Kong, June 25, 2004 — Fujitsu Hong Kong Limited, a leading provider of customer-focused information technology and telecommunications (IT & T) solutions and services, today announced enhancements to its fifth-generation SPARC64® processor. Exploiting the company's long-term processor development experience, the Fujitsu SPARC64 V processor is fabricated using 90-nanometer (nm) process technology, a first for UNIX® based servers, and operates at 1.89 GHz. The enhancements deliver a significant performance boost averaging 35 percent faster than previous generations.

Employing cutting-edge 90nm semiconductor technology and copper wiring technology designed by Fujitsu's Akiruno Technology Center, the SPARC64 V processor provides a range of built-in reliability functions, including highly accurate error detection, Error Checking and Correction, and instruction retry functions that include error correction and other high-precision RAS functions. These features, combined with hot-plug redundancy of major system components, such as the power supply unit and system board, give Fujitsu's PRIMEPOWER servers the superior reliability and availability required for 24x7 system operation.

"The leading-edge 1.89GHz SPARC64 V processors are built on Fujitsu's long history of expertise in high-performance computing and high-reliability systems designs," said Herbert Chan, Marketing Manager of Fujitsu Hong Kong Ltd. "With the extended partnership with Sun Microsystems to develop and deliver the future generation Solaris™/SPARC systems in 2006, Fujitsu will continue to apply its mainframe-class computing experience and technology into the SPARC-based systems, creating the best-of-breed platform and new value for enterprise customers around the world."

PRIMEPOWER servers with the new SPARC64 V processor hold several top benchmark performance records for the SPECjbb™2000 (Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation Java Business Benchmark 2000) benchmark for systems running Java-based business applications and the SPECint™_rate2000 benchmark, which appraises the integer arithmetic efficiency with a multiple processor constitution. As these performance records demonstrate (as of June 22, 2004), Fujitsu's PRIMEPOWER servers using the latest SPARC64 V processors deliver the highest processing performance for mission-critical enterprise systems.

In addition to increased clock speed and 90-nm fabrication technology, the new SPARC64 V processor will incorporate 3 MB on-chip second-level cache, another element that allows PRIMEPOWER servers to achieve maximized throughput and uptime. The new 90-nm processor will be used in the PRIMEPOWER 650, 850, 900, 1500 and 2500 server models. It can also be mixed and matched with previous generations of the SPARC64 processor in the same system for the PRIMEPOWER 900, 1500 and 2500 models.

The PRIMEPOWER series of UNIX servers are a core product line in Fujitsu's IT infrastructure strategy to support enterprises' evolving IT requirements. Aiming to meet the needs for open-standard systems and improved business continuity and efficiency, Fujitsu's IT infrastructure products are designed to help corporations and public institutions expand the scope of their activities, quickly set up new operations, achieve system stability, and reduce total cost of ownership.
