Fujitsu's Softek TDMF Software Ensure Data Integrity and Maximizes 24/7 System Availability
Hong Kong, March 21, 2003 — Businesses are having immense volume of data every day and are struggling to manage their storage resources while keeping the management cost down. Data has become more critical to every business. Industry experts state that the cost of downtime per hour to an organization can be between US$330,000 and US$3 million depending on the business. A minute of data loss can cost a lot to an organization, therefore data management is an important area that IT managers should not overlook.
Business Related Issues
Apart from the challenge to meet 24/7 availability requirement, organizations are facing other business related issues based upon an independent customer focus group study:
- Backup is the leading storage-related IT challenge
The backup process is enormously labor-intensive and prone to error. Businesses are struggling to conduct backups with a small window. And there is a high volume of backup tapes managed on daily basis. - Data migration presents unique challenges
The data migration process is time-consuming and prone to error, largely due to heterogeneous O/S and storage hardware environment. - Keeping pace with technology
Having latest technology support is the critical unmet need for data centralization. - Disaster recovery and business continuity plans are often not well planned, or not available at worst.
It is an enormous challenge given the predominance of inefficiently deployed storage architectures/lack of data centralization. While disaster recovery has moved to forefront given September 11, management generally is unwilling to invest in enterprise-wide solutions. - Lack of vendor neutral, cross-platform storage management solutions
Softek TDMF
Fujitsu's Softek TDMF Open Systems Edition is a network-based volume replication product for Solaris, HP/ UX and Windows NT/ 2000 that enables data exchange and synchronization in support of local applications, data sharing among remote sites and disaster recovery. Softek TDMF is a solution that is host based data replication helps addressing each of the above business related issues. It is also a host based software resides on the server and that makes it storage vendor independent and can replicate data "real" time, while the applications are still available to end users.
What does Softek TDMF do?
- Replicates data non-disruptively over TCP/IP within a single storage system, or over LAN or WAN.
- Multiple configurations allow for maximum flexibility and use, including asynchronous, synchronous and semi-synchronous.
- Shortens backup window. It is a "window-less" backup, business-critical resources at the primary location are kept available while a tape backup is performed on the secondary site.
- Enables consolidated backups from multiple servers. No longer need a tape drive attached to each server. Data is replicated non-disruptively while the applications are up and running. Downtime can go from hours to minutes.
- Ability to move faster, less expensive storage with little disruption. Replications can take place with applications up and running, thus improves return on investment (ROI) due to the shortened time that new and old storage are both on the premises. With its vendor independent feature, business can use one tool for all storage and servers. It can also replicate locally or from long distance, and replicate data into or out of a SAN.
- Enhances existing business continuity plans. Storage TDMF ensures that replicated copy is always consistent. Ability to continuous tracking updates if network or remote server fails, it enables business to replicate data to remote sites for enhanced disaster recovery strategy.
- Does not require pre-requisite software or hardware
In summary, Softek TDMF software is a hardware and vendor-independent replication solution that provides continuous data synchronization over a TCP/IP network. It is particularly useful for server migration or consolidation, taking point-in-time copies for backups or off-host processing, and for disaster recovery. It also has sophisticated error handling and control capabilities through the use of throttles and tunable parameters which allow it to operate with minimal impact on existing infrastructure.
BUSINESS HIGHLIGHTS
