Fujitsu Unveils 60GB 2.5-inch Hard Disk Drives

- Extends Push for HDD Market Leadership

Hong Kong, October 3, 2002 — Fujitsu Hong Kong Limited today introduced its new MHS Series 2.5 inch hard disk drives for of next-generation. The new series meets Fujitsu's fluid dynamic bearing (FDB) motor technology standard, which renders the drives virtually silent.

The new mobile MHS series drives offer a best-in-class density of 53.2Gb/in2, enabling 30GB of storage on a single 2/5" disk. The new drives come with capacities of 60, 40 and 30GB at speeds of 4,200RPM.

A 60GB capacity point is equivalent to about 2.3million emails, 60,000 digital photographs, 900 CD-quality MP3 music files, or 15 DVD-quality full-length motion pictures. Together, the large capacity, low form-factor, and 2.5-inch configuration make Fujitsu's new drives well suited not only for intensive mobile computing applications, but also for emerging markets that include digital home appliances, MP3 players, and portable HDD systems.

The new MHS series supports Ultra ATA/100 interface and offers exceptional Non-Repeatable Run-Out performance with 12ms average seek time and up to 38.1MB/s (max) transfer rate. Fujitsu FDB technology greatly improves drives acoustic performance with acoustic noise rating of 24dBA at 30 centimeters, but at the same time offering better shock resistance. Additionally, the new series incorporates Fujitsu's Synthetic Ferrimagnetic (SF) Media technology of, an advanced recording medium which is highly resistant to thermal instability and enables hard disk drives to achieve recording densities up to 300 gigabits per square inch. Weighing just 99g and with a 2MB buffer, the MHS hard disk drives are among the industry's smallest and highest performing products.

3.5" Hard Disk Drive - MAP Series

Fujitsu's new 10,000rpm MAP3xxx series includes models of 36.7GB, 73.5GB and 147GB optimum capacities. The series is thus ideal for all mainstream SCSI applications, such as enterprise servers, PC servers, workstations and RAID subsystems, where data integrity and reliability are essential.

These new drives offer new performance standards with a maximum internal transfer rate of 107.8MB/s and a fast average seek time of 4.5ms. It is equipped with an 8MB, multi-segmented data buffer with a 32-bit-wide internal data path for faster data access. In addition, the series supports 2Gb FC-AL2 and Ultra320 SCSI (320MB/s) interfaces, which enhances features, such as data packet protocol, quick arbitration and selection as well as signal pre-compensation.

Concerning reliability, the new series features industry's highest MTBF rating of 1,200,000 hours. It also incorporates many enhanced features, such as alloy top cover for lower acoustics and an improved SMART detection system.
