Fujitsu Launches the World’s First 500GB¹ 2.5-Inch Hard Disk Drives with AES 256-bit Encryption²
Fujitsu's first halogen-free³ hard disk drives set new industry standards in data protection, power saving and environmental compliance

Hong Kong, December 30, 2008 — Fujitsu Hong Kong Limited, a leading information and communications technology solutions and services provider, today announced the launch of the world's first 500GB 2.5-inch hard disk drives (HDDs) with AES 256-bit encryption to Hong Kong customers. These HDD models are designed to meet Hong Kong customers' raising standard of operational efficiency, data security and environmental compliance.
Fujitsu's MJA2 CH series is the world's first HDD featuring AES 256-bit encryption, the standard form of encryption selected by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology and used by the US Government. With this encryption feature, data is automatically encrypted when it is recorded. All data stored on the HDD can also be erased with a split of the second using the advanced secure erase function. These data security features provide a strong defence against data leaks when a computer is lost or stolen and minimise the hassle of removing data securely before disposal. The total cost of ownership of customers can thereby be reduced.
Both MJA2 CH and MJA2 BH series, another new member of Fujitsu's HDD line-up launched today in Hong Kong, are Fujitsu's first halogen-free HDD models and the latest offerings under Fujitsu's Green Policy Innovation programme unveiled in December 2007. By reducing the levels of chlorine and bromine or their compounds to permissible levels, hazardous substances that emit from their disposal by incineration can be minimised. These new HDDs are also manufactured thin compliance with the European Union's RoHS Directive4 that regulates the use of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment, providing further protection to the environment and people's health.
"Like many other jurisdictions around the world, the government and customers in Hong Kong have paid more attention to environmental protection than ever before. They are more eager and receptive to solutions that can help upgrade their operational efficiency in an environmentally responsible manner," said Christopher So, General Manager, Volume Products, Fujitsu Hong Kong Limited. "The two new HDD models are Fujitsu's most recent offerings in response to this rising need, and to materialise our vision to create value for customers with innovation and technology and a strong commitment to the environment."
Built with industry-leading levels of energy efficiency, both MJA2 BH and MJA2 CH models consume only 1.4 watts of power when recording data, 33% less than previous models5. When idle or in standby mode, power consumption is further reduced to 0.13 watt, minimising operating costs for customers and avoiding power wastage.
Fujitsu's MJA2 BH and MJA2 CH HDD series will be available from end of December 2008 and the first quarter of 2009 respectively.

Notes
¹ One gigabyte (GB) equals to one billion bytes, accessible capacity will be less and actual capacity depends on the operating environment and formatting.
² AES defines three possible key lengths: 128, 192 and 256 bits. The longer the key, the stronger the encryption will be.
³ "Halogen-free" means the levels of chlorine (CL) and bromine (Br) or a compound of the elements meet the standards of IEC61249-2-21:2003: Chlorine – less than 900 ppm; bromine – less than 900 ppm; chlorine + bromine – less than 1,500 ppm.
4 RoHS stands for "Restriction on the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment" issued by the European Union (EU) on 13 February 2003 to minimise risk to the environment and people in EU’s member countries.
5 Based on comparison between MJA2 BH and its predecessor MHZ2 BH.
6 Some buffer memory will be used by the firmware controller.
7 Excluding PCBA and connector.
